University City was founded in 1864 by the Reverend J.C. Peabody and his wife, Mary. The city was named after University of Missouri chancellor Dr. James K. Polk, who also donated land for the university. The first students at the university were students from nearby Pella; they started classes in October 1864. The original building on campus was a log cabin that burned down in 1865, but the school continued to function using temporary facilities until 1870 when it moved into its current building on State Street. In 1902, University City became a charter member of the United States Association for Education in Cities and Towns (USACE). The city experienced growth during World War II with an influx of war-time workers and soldiers who created new businesses and homes within the city limits. During this time period, University City also saw many major league professional sports teams beginning to play their games within its boundaries including baseball's Kansas City Athletics (now called Royals) and football's St Peters School Indians (now called Cardinals). Many famous people have made their mark within or outside of University City during this time including author Fannie Flaggs and civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.. In recent years, University City has seen steady growth with more development taking place within its borders such as an addition of new businesses along State Street as well as population explosion due to increasing suburbanization across Missouri which has led to increased competition for jobs in downtown areas like University City. With these changes comes increased pressure on resources like housing and infrastructure which has resulted in some problems such as increasing crime rates among young adults living in downtown areas adjacent to popular tourist destinations such as Old Town Saint Louis or Westport Village
