Troy, Missouri is a small town located in the Ozarks of eastern Missouri. The population was 7,971 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The first settlers in Troy were immigrants from Germany who arrived in 1819. They built a farm on the north side of town and named it Germania. The name changed to Troy in 1825 when James Hogue bought land near present-day University Drive and named it after his brother, Troy Hogue. In 1829, John Dickey settled in what is now east central Troy and began trading goods with Germans living around him for bread and milk. By 1830, he had a store and bakery that functioned as two small towns sharing one street. In 1830, William Nicholson also founded a shop at what is now downtown Troy. He became an important factor in the growth of both towns. By 1840, there were nine stores in Troy and eight businesses operating on University Drive between Old Hickory Road and Dutch Elm Street. In 1847, David Dixon established the first cotton gin west of the Mississippi River in what is now Springfield, Illinois; this gin provided early cottonseed oil with which to make paper products such as clothesline ropes and towels for local residents until it closed in 1865 due to competition from mills closer to Chicago. In 1850-1851 Gardner Matson replaced Dixon as company manager of Central Cotton Gin Co.; during his tenure (1850-1857), production increased by 50%. On July 3, 1861, four companies organized themselves into Union Parish Regiment #2 under command of Colonel Augustus Kelley: 1st United States Infantry Regiment (4 Companies), 2nd United States Infantry Regiment (3 Companies), 4th United States Infantry Regiment (1 Company). On November 15th General Andrew Johnson announced that all native Confederate forces must surrenders or be destroyed; within hours more than 12000 men had surrendered including 9000 officers & men from three infantry regiments plus artillery batteries numbering over 8000 pieces! This event helped spur American entry into the Civil War against slavery! The Union Parish regiment lost only one man killed during battle while 19 men died from disease contracted along with many others wounded or captured during rebel occupation...Union Parish formed part of State 5th Missouri Volunteer Militia Brigade which fought off numerous raids by Confederate guerrillas throughout 1863-1865... After Union victory at Battleof Missionary Ridge on April 9 1865 General Philip Sheridan ordered all troops out except for those remaining under your commands who were mustered into service May 1st under new regulationsÂ… These units served primarily adjacent to Springfield Armory where ammunition was manufacturedÂ…
