Troy, MO is a small town in the Ozarks region of Missouri. The population was 1,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-based city of Springfield. The town began as a farmstead on the east side of what is now Troy Creek. A post office called Troy was established in 1836, and remained in operation until it closed in 1907. The township was organized in 1842, and the first school was built that year. In 1865, a railroad station was built here, and the town became known as "Troy Station." In 1871, local farmers founded an Improvement Company to build irrigation canals through their property. The company grew rapidly and by 1885 had completed twenty miles of canal. By 1912, it had completed ninety miles of canals; this helped Troy become one of the most prolific agricultural communities in Missouri. During World War II, Troy became an important manufacturing center for munitions production due to its location near several major military factories such as Westinghouse Electric Company and General Dynamics Corporation (which manufactured tanks). The war also generated significant economic development for the town; many new businesses were founded during that time period including poultry producer National Poultry (now Tyson Foods) and paper manufacturer American Paper Supply Incorporated (now United Parcel Service). A large fire destroyed much downtown business activity on October 20th 1947 which left over 400 businesses without any type of support; however some returned within months with help from donations from local residents Today there are few traces remaining from pre-war life save for a few historic buildings like theoriginal post office building which has been converted into apartmentsblvd.,and a small park located off main square
