Troy, Missouri is a city in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 7,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of St. Francois County and the largest city in the metropolitan area of Kansas City, Missouri. The first settlement in what is now Troy was made by fur traders from Montreal in 1804. The town started as a trading post on the Illinois River and grew rapidly because of its location near major transportation routes. In 1825, Troy became an independent village when it merged with neighboring Decatur Township to form a new municipality. In 1836, when Shawnee Indians attacked and burned down the Village of Troy, which had been founded two years earlier by Nicholas Kapp and his sons Elijah and John Kapp, settlers responded with gunfire that killed six Indians and destroyed their campsite. The Attack on Troy served as a rallying cry for settler aggression against Native Americans throughout much of Missouri during the 1830s and 1840s. President James Buchanan issued Executive Order 9771 in February 1861 calling for martial law in all of Missouri due to "the extraordinary situation created by insurrectionary elements among certain portions of our people." This order allowed Union forces under General Ulysses S. Grant to march into central Missouri without any resistance from local militia or civilians who were instead called into service by Governor Robert Peculiar to suppress insurgency within Confederate territory within days following the attack on Troy

Troy, Missouri is located in the Ozarks region of the Midwest and has been inhabited by Native Americans for more than 10,000 years. The first white people to arrive in Troy were farmers who came from Illinois in 1836. They founded a community called Prairie Grove, which was located on the south side of the river. The town was originally named after General James K. Polk, who had been president at the time. In 1838, the area around Troy became part of St. Louis County and was renamed Hillside Heights after a developer named Hillside donated land for a school and church. When Kansas became an independent state in 1861, it included parts of St. Louis County andHillside Heights were lost to Kansas City. However, when Missouri joined Unionist forces during World War II, Hillside Heights again became part of Troy because it was within city limits (although it still retains its ZIP code). The first store in Troy opened in 1853 and soon there were several businesses catering to settlers living near the riverfront. By 1870, there were over 30 stores along with several hotels and restaurants serving up food to passersby on Market Street. One such business was Hargrave’s Grocery which is now known as Eastern BBQ fame (it closed down in 2010). The growth of commercialism led to tension between merchants and locals over access to resources such as water or space for development; this eventually led to street violence which often involved public officials trying to broker resolutions through negotiation instead of using force.) In 1907, Mayor John Atherton built what is now downtown Troy on land that once belonged to Prairie Grove High School (which he also donated). At that time it was one of only two high schools open in town; other schools were run by private individuals or churches until they too closed down during prohibition times. According to legend, Mayor Atherton offered $5 per acre for property surrounding his school so that people could build their homes close by without havingto worry about traffic jams or building codes! Over time different groups have tried their hand at developing downtown Troy; both local entrepreneurs and developers have come and gone but no one has managed to bringhtowork Downtown like entrepreneur Marvin Hebert did back in 2008-2009! His project called “Troy Promenade” featured renovated buildings along Market Street from Clay Street all the way uptown into Central Park/Downtown before returning back down towards Clay Street again! This new development brought much needed economic stability not only for downtown but also for surrounding neighborhoods including South Broadway which saw significant gentrification following Hebert’s original renovation project!
