On May 14, 2018, after a year of research and planning, the Troy Police Department announced that it had secured the purchase of an upgraded gun security system. Troy is a city in the Ozarks region of Missouri, United States. It was founded in 1836 by surveyors from Illinois as part of the Kansas Territory. The population was 14,026 at the 2010 census. The City of Troy is named for General George Armstrong Custer and his forces who fought in the American Civil War on the side of the Union. The first European to visit Troy was Étienne Brûlé, an official envoy from France who explored what would become Missouri Territory in 1819. He named a portion of present-day east Troy after General John Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry in April 1859, which helped spur settlers to move into this area. In 1836, surveyors from Illinois organized a wagon train to travel through present-day Missouri and Kansas Territories looking for land to settle. When they reached Springfield, they met local representatives including Senator James Kansa and Representative Elijah Butterfield. They were persuaded to start a town here because it would be close to major trade routes and transportation hubs like Topeka and Independence (then called Riley). With only 5 people living there at the time, early settlers constructed homes around their wagons or built them out of logs that had been cut down near the river. In 1840, Sturgis "Gus" Grimes purchased 2200 acres (10 km2) along Mobile River west of present-day downtown Troy for $3 per acre ($60 total). This location became known as Grimes' Grove due to its high fertility rates which made it ideal for farming: one crop could provide enough food for 10 people plus meat, eggs and flour for breadmaking purposes! Gus also developed another business enterprise: selling griststones from his farm mill downstream where he turned them into flour which he transported by boat upriver to Springfield whence he sold it at auction house prices! Grimes served as Mayor pro tem during Andrew Johnson's first term as President; however he resigned upon being elected Vice President.) After TennesseebecametheUnionandMissouri collecded withitin1861,[1]grimescontinuedtoproduceflourformarketandsolditat Auction House Prices until1868 when heclosedhismilldue totrafficking.[2] His mill remained open until 1896 when it stopped functioning due totheaftermathoftheCivilWar.[3] At some point prior to 1916,[4] part of Grimsons Millicoastlocatedjust offshorefrompresent daySturgeon Bayouon Mud Island about 8 miles (13 km) northeastofpresent dayDowntown Troy(whichinitiallywasnamedPortageBayou afterCaptainJohn Portagewho exploradestroyingthesouthern MISSOURI FALLS region thereby providing newtradepuncturesoutheastofthe Mississippi Valley).[5][6][7][8] A few years later in 1851 Augustus Kelley set up shop just south off I-55/I-640 between present day downtown Troy and Farmington Hills north of today's University Heights neighborhood[9]. Here Kelley operated a grocery store/ bakery/ post office (with service extended into neighboring towns such as Hollandale) before moving his operation two blocks eastward in 1862 to what is now northwest corner of Main Street/Route 66 Avenue NW & Northeast Corner Road NW inside what is now Pioneer Village Shopping Center[10]. In 1865 Edward Smith opened up his own general store across from Main Street opposite Pioneer Village Shopping Center becoming one of first permanent businesses within what is now centered around downtown Troy – taking advantageof Kingman’s Landing being rebuilt after having been burned down by Indians several years earlier[11]). That same year also saw large construction projects take place throughout much OF MOZIPLACE resulting intotheinstallationOF railroadstationsalongMOZIPLACEranging FROMKingmanToKansasCityANDOakvilleTOWichitaPSTransportation WAS SO IMPORTANT THEN THAT IT HAS LEFT ITS MARK ON THE CITYscape TODAY!:%&*#@($
Troy was a small town in southern Missouri that served as the county seat of Troy County from 1836 to 1871. The original town site was on the east side of the Mississippi River, about 10 miles (16 km) south of present-day St. Louis. It was chartered on July 4, 1836, by commissioners appointed by Governor James K. Polk to provide a county seat for Osage County, which had been organized January 1, 1835. The Town Hall and most of the early buildings were built between 1840 and 1850 by local farmers and their families who sought to avoid paying taxes to a much larger and more populous neighbor on the west bank of the river. In 1861, when Manchester became the new county seat, Troy declined an offer to become its replacement because it could not support itself financially without aid from outside sources. Finally incorporated as a city in 1865, it struggled until becoming an important center for defense clockmaking during World War II. Aftermath: In 1971, when St. Louis annexed Troy City into its limits, it removed all vestiges of its old civic life although some remnants remain today in downtown St. Louis or at park areas nearby such as Forest Park and Libbey Park
