Troy, Mo., is a small town in north-central Missouri located on the edge of the Ozarks. The population was 6,226 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Saline County Micropolitan Statistical Area. Troy was founded by fur traders in 1812 and named for Lieutenant Colonel John Fenton, a United States cavalryman who served with General Andrew Jackson during the War of 1812. The town prospered from its natural resources until after World War II when it suffered from economic decline and neglect. In 1978, an effort to revive downtown Troy failed but led to passage of a resolution recognizing Troy's history and heritage as one of progressivism and opportunity. The first settler in what would become Troy was Gideon Welles in 1812. Welles had come overland from Kentucky with his family in search of new land to explore. He discovered what he thought were tracts of land totaling 640 acres (250 ha) east of where Saline County now stands. On July 4, 1815, Welles submitted an application for a grant from President James Kansa that would establish the city of Springfield on these lands. The grant was granted on October 15, 1815; however, due to Oglethorpe’s Purchase Act (1816), which transferred ownership of all publiclands westward into private hands, only about half the acreage Grant #1 amounted to – leaving much unused land between Springfield and Old West Point where future Troy developed (Welles reported that “Nearer my house than this I have ever seen anything but wilderness”). In 1830 Unionist John Gregg leased 1/2 mile (0 km) east of present day First Street from Native American Louis Parker for $225 per year – making it possible for white people to live side-by-side with Native Americans without fear or violence. Gregg built two log cabins here called Gregg’s Grove which still stand today; he also erected a small store near Centre Street and barned his animals there until moving them closer to his farmstead after sale by Indian agent Lewis Cassius Sturgis in 1840.(1) Another early settler was James McMurtry who came overland via Missouri River wagon train on April 11th 1830(2). McMurtry Charley operated a cabin on what is now Second Street east of Center Avenue for nine months before moving back upstream onto McLouth Prairie.(3) By 1850 more than 100 buildings had been erected along Main Street including three churches: First Baptist Church built around 1830 by Elijah Smith; Second BaptistChurch built around 1840 by Isaac Asbury; Third Methodist Church erected around 1860 by Jno.[ citation needed ] Other buildings included homes for merchants such as Gourdine & Washburne et al.; blacksmith shops; gristmills; saw mills; livery stables; hotels/boarding houses etc.; schools including Griggs Institute School started about 1800and Union Academy School opened in 1865 both within walking distance of each other.(4) By 1870 only 3%of town residents lived within 2 miles (3 km) radius while 90% lived further away.(5)(6)(7)(8)(9)(10)[11] Banking began operations January 1st 1861 under charter agreement between Washington National Bank Coorporation chartered February 27th 1861(12)[12] In 1863 Moberly Furniture Coorporation organized with Reuben Hinton as president[13][14][15] Merchants soon found another source for goods available nearer home: local farmers supplied goods direct rather then buying items at locally owned stores through middlemen.(16)[17][18][19] With few exceptions storefront businesses closed throughout most portions OF THE 20TH CENTURY outside OF Troy proper - examples include Gregg's Grocery closed 1951,[20](21)] hardware stores like Mills Hardware closed 1959,[22](23)] druggists like Hennen & Company closed 1967,[24],[25], restaurants such as Pheasant Placeclosed 1971,[26] post office closed 1979,[27],[28]etc...iron ore mined nearby ceased production circa 1941 according [29]: "Some local entrepreneurs managed to keep alive some semblance ol commerce although primary production shifted inland" . No significant development occurred following WWII aside from increasing population density which caused infrastructure problems faced by both locals and larger towns alike:(30)[31])
