Troy, Missouri is a small town located in Carter County, Missouri. It is one of the few remaining towns in Carter County that was founded before the arrival of the railroad. The population of Troy increased slowly until the early 20th century when it began to grow rapidly due to waves of immigration from Northern Italy and Germany. The post-WWI boom brought more immigrants and their families to Troy, creating an even larger population than during earlier periods. Today, Troy remains a largely Italian-American community with German and Polish also present. The town was originally named for General John A. Ferguson who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as a U.S. Senator from Missouri. In 1868, James Gentry purchased a tract of land east of town and renamed it Troy after himself. Gentry's farm produced corn, hay, oatmeal, potatoes, appleseeds (a type of wheat), oilseeds (beans), flaxseed and other crops for local markets while his family ran a bakery which provided bread for many residents in addition to playing various musical instruments at home or traveling throughout the surrounding countryside providing music on horseback or on dirks (a type of drum). In 1907 businessman George Fenton bought 400 acres adjacent to Gentry's farm which he donated to the village for development into what is now known as downtown Troy. Fenton had numerous interests including making lead mining possible in central Missouri using his gift as well as developing new industries such as automobiles manufacturing plants near Carbondale and aluminum production near Lombardville among others; all within walking distance of his property today were some if not all these original businesses still functioning today! From this initial development period onward there has been significant growth both inside and outside downtown Troy with various extensions being built along State Highway 64 including Interstate 70 which runs through town west to Carbondale/Lombardville then turns south towards St Josephs just east of downtown where I-70 splits again becoming US Highways 31st Street/US Route 66 then US Route 624 running concurrently through town becoming Interstate 70 again before terminating at exit 24B off I-70 just northwest of downtown where commercial development resumed beginning late last decade! Troy is a city in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. The population was 5,846 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of St. Louis County and it is part of the Saint Louis metropolitan area. Troy was founded in 1835 by members of the Lewis and Clark Expedition as an encampment on the east bank of the Mississippi River. Troy was named after General John A. Ferguson, who fought in the American Civil War and later served as Ulysses S. Grant's secretary of war and then as president pro tempore of the United States Senate from 1877 to 1881. The city became a consolidated city-county on February 17, 1907 following a vote by residents of both cities over which town would be their new county seat. The current name comes from one Alex Haley's book about African Americans in America, "The Autobiography of Malcolm X". In 1911, construction began on what would become Memorial Stadium for football games between Saint Louis University (then known as Southern Illinois Normal Institute) and Troy State Teachers College (now Troy State University). In 1933, they added baseball to the schedule; that season Northern Illinois University played its first game at Memorial Stadium against Stonington High School before going on to win 10 out of 11 games that year with George Brett batting leadoff for NIU. In 1940 when Southern Illinois Normal Institute merged with DePauw University to form SIU/DePauw University School of Medicine & Health Sciences, Memorial Stadium became home field for DePauw until 1971 when SIU took over home field responsibility from DePauw and renamed it Macalester Hallowed Ground in honor of Drs., James Linton Macalester (1845–1925) and Burton Kemplin (1891–1978). On October 3rd 1984 US Cellular Field opened moved from Veterans Park located adjacent to downtown into this now demolished building across First Avenue south side only 2 blocks west from where Memorial Stadium once stood
