The first settler in Town and Country was John Hites. A post office called Hitesville was established in 1836, but never opened. In 1838, a group of settlers traveling through Hardin County stopped at what is now Town andCountry on their way to start a new settlement near Topeka, Kansas. They named the new town after themselves--town being Latin for "place." The first store in Town and Country was built by J.F. Hudgins on the corner of Pritchard Road and Main Street in 1839. In 1840, a party of men led by James Minton arrived from Independence, Missouri with news that $1,000 had been found buried around Topeka under tools used by local farmers during the Mexican-American War campaign that year. This discovery planted the seed for what would become one of top economic engines for hardin county: farm production led to brickmaking and other manufacturing jobs throughout the early 19th century as easterners moved westward into what were then frontier areas seeking fortunes in new frontiersmen cultures (see American Frontier history).
