During this time period, other key businesses such as a grocery store and hotel opened up in town which helped contribute to its continued growth over the years. In 1984, when Northwest Missouri became part of Kansas City metropolitan area, Town And Country lost much of its importance but still retains some proudly independent businesses today including a primary school system that continues to operate under its own name (now known as Jefferson County Schools) and a small number of residences scattered around Main Street downtown which still maintain many traditional features associated with pioneer life including animal husbandry (farming), blacksmithing (building cannons), pottery making (women doing housework) etc..
In 1836, the Town and Country company was organized in what is now Independence, Missouri. The town served as a transportation hub for farmers on the west side of the state and as a stopping point on the Great Western Railroad. In 1840, the company built a sawmill and gristmill in town. The town declined after World War II due to lack of population growth and competition from larger towns in the area. In 1978, the town was merged into Jefferson County.
