As of the census of 2000, there were 5,964 people, 2,872 households, and 1,711 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,522.6 people per square mile (642.0/km²). There were 3,183 housing units at an average density of 663.2 per square mile (245.4/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 96% White (non-Hispanic), 0% Black or African American, 2% Native American (unspecified), 0% Asian Pacific Islander, 0% Pacific Islander from other races*, 1% Hispanic or Latino* (of any race), and 2% from two or more races*. In terms of ancestry: 78% German; 7% English; 4% Irish; 3%-5% Scandinavian; <1%, unspecified.*
Town and Country was a town in Polk County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. The first European to visit Town and Country was Captain James K. Polk in 1837. He named it after his home state of Illinois - "Town" meaning "place," "Country" meaning "land", and "Village" meaning hamlet. The town plat was filed on March 1, 1840. In 1848, the Missouri legislature passed an act creating two counties in Polk County; one for the east part of the county ( Town and Country) and one for the west part ( Whitley and Greenbrier). The new county boundaries were published on May 20, 1848. On November 8, 1850, the Union Pacific Railroad completed its eastern branch from Saint Louis to Independence parish in Whitley County; this made Town and Country an incorporated village. The railroad name changed to Independenceville on December 12, 1850. The post office at Town And Country continued operating as a mail service until it closed on October 15th 1951 due to low mail volume.
