The area now known as Town and Country was first settled by Germans in 1836. The name came from "TOWN" (the original name for what is now Springfield) and "CITY" (St. Louis County). German settlers were attracted to the fertile soil, clear streams, and available hunting and fishing opportunities in this rugged region near the Mississippi River. Over time, other cultures have also populated the area: African Americans in the early days; Irish in later years; Poles during World War II; Italians after that; American Indians until recently. The current community was founded around 1870 when a group of land speculators led by Isaac Hicks bought 640 acres of forested land northwest of Springfield from local Indian chief Weahingohekee for $2 per acre. The first school was built on what is now Main Street in 1872-73, but it burned down soon after construction began. A new school building was erected on present day Market Street in 1876-77 using money raised from a public auction of goods destroyed during an Anti-Slavery raid two months earlier. In 1898, Old Fort Dixon was moved to its present location just east of town on Route 64 about two miles west of Highway 362 (now Interstate 435). That year saw also one of Town & Country's most significant moments when Drury University offered its first course leading to higher education for blacks – an event that helped spur racial integration at Stroudsburg University three decades later. throughout its history Town &Country has been home to many businesses including Ford dealership since 1903 followed by Litton Tire store which opened 1966 with several other businesses before closing down in 2001 finally becoming a post office reopened as a restaurant called Piggly Wiggly starting 2005

In 1902, Town And Country incorporated as a village with a population of 150 people and it has since grown to over 1,000 residents within its boundaries! In 2005-2006, Town & Country became home to both an American Legion Post #2 (the only one in the county) as well as two baseball stadiums which have seen attendance grow exponentially each season! With such activity taking place within its limits it's little wonder that tourism has taken off for Town AndCountry – becoming one of the most popular tourist destinations in Clay County!
