The town was named for Townshend, England, where its founder family had come to America as refugees in the early 1800s. At the time of its founding, Townshend consisted of only a few buildings and an acre or two of land. By 1840, however, it had grown to encompass over eighty acres with a population of more than one hundred people. In 1834, Mayor John Henni offered his services as sheriff and served from then until 1835 when he became mayor again and served until1839 when he died suddenly at age fifty-three years old. In this time period Mayor Henni also built several public buildings including the present courthouse and jail which were completed in 1840. On September 15th 1861 Missouri seceded from the Union and became an independent state; therefore, all municipal records were lost after Missouri's admission into the Union on April 12th 1865. However some town officials applied for a special order to be issued to preserve their Municipal Records which survived intact until 1923 when they were destroyed by fire during move-out cleaning operations for new permanent quarters for the St Louis-Missouri Metropolitan Area Library system (now known as MO State Library). In 1865 George Fenton purchased 640 acres north of town along Clear Creek which formed what is now Park Meadows Cemetery; this purchase added much-needed open space to what was then an agricultural community located near downtown St Louis on one side of Clear Creek valley and east of present day Town And Country on another side within easy walking distance of both cities center (now known as Midtown Saint Louis). This purchase made Park Meadows one ofStLouis' largest recent purchases - providing much neededian open space contiguous with downtown while still preserving many original features such as attached homes dating back to pioneer days such as Smith House #1 just east off Main Street today’s Wadsworth Shopping Center across US 362 north near IH 35 & KFC Plaza currently home to Jack In The Box restaurant
