In 1849, three brothers named Daniel Boone arrived from Kentucky and started a trading post near present day St. Peters on the banks of Little Rock River which later became known as Boone City (now part of Lebanon). They sold goods from their trading post and also donated land for a schoolhouse and church which were dedicated on July 26th, 1850 by Reverend James Ketchum (1811-1892). As the years passed, businesses grew up around the original trading post including a store built by John Denton (1798-1868) that continues to operate today called Denton's Corner Store. In 1865 an act was passed giving township status to Clay County so all business within its boundaries must apply for incorporation as villages or townships only if they had a population of 500 residents or more without special exemption. This made St. Peters one of only two communities within Clay County with this type of designation; the other being Ozark City located about four miles east on Highway 63 outside of Cairo (Clay County seat until 1930). On November 10th, 1886 saw another milestone as electric lighting became available for use in St. Peters when Elijah Prewitt connected an Edison machine to power an arc lamp at his home which he used for commercial purposes before moving it into his house brick by brick beginning on December 1st following his own installation ceremonies supervised by Mr Edison himself! The community continued to grow with new businesses opening up such as A & J Hardware and Mrs Henson’s bakery which still stands today across Main Street from PO Box 309 where you can purchase your morning cup of Joe hearse coffee! With so many businesses active it wasn't long before social clubs/organizations sprang up such as Ladies Aid society who met upstairs at Mrs Henson’s restaurant afternoons until supplies ran out upstairs during lunchtime! Today much property remains Blocks 2-4 downtown including Mrs Henson’s bakery where you can continue your morning cupof Joe Hearse coffee operations unchanged since 1915! Today St Petersburg continues to thrive thanks to its vibrant community spirit along with some great local businesses that provide jobs for locals AND support our local economy!
On December 1, 1831, the first settlers arrived on the site of present-day St. Peters, Missouri. The area was part of what is now eastern Kansas and western Oklahoma at the time. The colonists were led by John C. Fremont, who had come to the area in 1825 as a scout for the U.S. army under General Winfield Scott. The town was named after Virginius Stansbury, an officer with Scott's army and one of Fremont's closest friends. It began as a small community near Fort Leavenworth and soon became a major trading center for pioneers moving westward from Illinois and Ohio into this new country. The town grew rapidly because of its location: close to strategic military installations and easy access to supplies and markets north of the Arkansas River. In addition, it attracted entrepreneurs who founded businesses such as a flour mill, groceries store, lumberyard, post office, schoolhouse (1830), Masonic Lodge (1831), and several churches (eastern Kansas Synod 1830-1889; northwestern Oklahoma Baptist Church 1892-1927). During its early years (1830-35), St Peters was also home to some of the earliest American Indian settlements in what is now Missouri: Brushy Fork Village (1830) on Clear Creek; Pawnee Village (1832) on Paint Rock Creek; Fallahee Village (1834) near modern day Springfield; and Kiowa village Unknown date on Hiwassee River
