The economic boom that ensued during the late 1800s helped spur development in downtown St. Peters; however, some elements of this growth led to tension between Polish-Americans and Italian-Americans over job opportunities and housing prices. This conflict escalated into violence in 1905 when two Polish-American men were killed by Italian-American assailants while working on a street project near Park Avenue South (now Rockwell Place). After years of simmering anger and tension between these groups, an open-air altercation erupted on November 25th, 1907 when almost half a dozen Italians began pelting Polish stores with rocks during rush hour as part of an effort to get jobs within local businesses (the incident is known as "Bloomingdale Day"). Violence continued sporadically throughout 1908 until it slowly dissipated following talks between both communities about how best to handle their differences peacefully?
