The first church on this site was built in 1857 by Father Michael J. McNamara, Rector of Saint Cloud Parish in Topeka, Kansas Territory. Father McNamara had come to Missouri from his native Ireland and he began preaching here in 1856. In 1862, when Fr McNamara was named pastor of Sts Peter’s Parish (now known as Holy Cross) onnutt Street near present day Main Street in Ferguson, he quickly ran into problems with local Protestants who didn’t want Catholics living on their streets or coming to services “in peaceable times” because Pope Leo XIII had declared war against Austria that year! Father McNamara fought back with vigor but eventually lost the battle when Protestants boycotted his parishes just as the American Civil War began. In 1870 Father McNamara moved his ministry to what is now The Cathedral Church south of I-435 eastbound (now Old Post Road). There were only 8 people attending Mass each Sunday morning before Father McNamara founded Our Redeemer Protestant Episcopal Church which grew rapidly until it eclipsed all other churches attendance within 5 years! By 1893 they were having 400 people attend mass each week! Today there are over 12000 Catholics living at St Peters and its surrounding areas!! In 1898 Fr John Chafee became pastor after being appointed by Bishop Coleman who took office after General Ulysses S Grant issued an Executive Order prohibiting discrimination on account of religious affiliation among Americans soldiers serving abroad during World War I! At first this order was ignored but soon enough many soldiers found out about it and reported their experiences to Bishop Coleman who threatened legal action if these reports weren’t stopped!!! After much discussion it was decided that Fr Chafe would be given one month notice to leave Ferguson if he couldn’t put together a team able to offer spiritual care for our Veterans stationed here! This led ultimately to his appointment as Pastor general for all catholic churches served by United States Military Forces overseas!!! When WW II started most people thought that Catholicism would be immune due to lack of persecution throughout Europe but unfortunately this wasn’t always true…..After Vatican Radio broadcasts revealed errors committed by Jesuits during WWII many priests left Romeactus orders & returned home…..This caused great schism within the Catholic Church worldwide leading many bishops around the world seeking guidance from Romeactus headquarters….Pope Pius XII called upon Cardinal Spellman not only because OF THE ABUSE BUT ALSO BECAUSE OF LACK OF INTEREST IN THE CHURCH BY MANY EMINENT CARDINALS WRITTEN ABOUT CONFUSINGLY MASSIVE CRIMES………Cardinal Spellman replied: “I am greatly filled with sorrow at what seems likely alsoto befaltered results from your complaints; however I cannot change my opinion without more evidence than exists at present….I have been asked what should be done about such cases—-and I reply That any solution must go through Cardinals [of course], not through me alone…..I am sorry that you feel so uncomfortable—-but please remember that we are working under difficult circumstances.–Pius XII″ So despite popular belief some things did happen during WWII while Catholicismwas completely unaffected- like Priestly Revocation events taking place across Europe!!!!!!!!! Today there are over 12000 Catholics living at St Peters and its surrounding areas!!! Churches continue providing essential social services including information/languages interpreters for those hearing impaired and other pastoral needs such as food pantries etc….Many families have formed strong connections with their local churches which helps contribute materially & emotionally towards worshiping God every day !!

In the early 1800s, St. Peters was a small town in Jackson County, Missouri. It was located on the east bank of the Arkansas River and was about 15 miles (24 kilometers) south of downtown Springfield. The first settler in what is now St. Peters was James Biddle, who arrived in 1802 from Pennsylvania. By 1820, there were only a few hundred people living in what is now St. Peters. However, during the 1830s and 1840s, some settlers moved to St. Peters from neighboring towns because of its good soil and opportunities for agriculture. In 1847, when Missouri became a state, it added land to Jackson County that included present-day St. Peters and other nearby townships. As more people moved into the area, cultivation of crops began to decline and development increased to support larger population densities; however, by 1860, most residents still lived in rural areas around their farmssteads or villages until they developed new settlements near Springfield after the Civil War ended (see History of Springfield).
