The town declined during the 1860s as more settlers arrived and transportation became available to farther away settlements; however, it regained some prominence after railroads bypassed it when they constructed their own lines through Springfield instead of waiting for trains to come through St. Peters each day (the exception being until about 1915 when Amtrak began serving St . Peters). The population hit its peak around 1900 before gradually declining throughout most of the 20th century; however, it has slowly begun to rebound since 2000 due to increasing employment opportunities within nearby communities such as Columbia Heights, Saint Louis Park, and Liberal Arts City (which includes both high-tech companies as well as traditional small businesses). From then until 1905, it served as both the seat of government for newly acquired Kansas Territory and as the capital for both Illinois and Arkansas before being moved back to Missouri again following that state's admission into the Union in 1907. Today, much of what once constituted downtown St. Peters has been demolished or supplanted by high-rise development within walking distance of many major cultural attractions such as Holy Cross Cathedral and Saint Ignatius Parish Hall; while smaller areas have retained some vestiges (e.g., Alameda Cemetery) providing an interesting glimpse into early 20th century life in this important town center dating back more than two centuries!
In 1819, a group of Mormons founded St. Peters, Missouri. The town was named after the apostle Peter and was located on the banks of the Arkansas River. In 1831, the Mormon Battalion relocated to St. Peters and in 1835, they erected a brick courthouse and seal office. The first mayor of St. Peters was John Atherton. The town also had a school, Brewery Park, a Masonic Lodge #2 (the only one in central Missouri), an opera house, and a few stores. By 1840, there were over 100 residents in St. Peters and it had become an important cultural center for the Mormons in central Missouri. In 1845-46, tensions between LDS believers and non-LDS residents ran high when several LDS members were accused of polygamy; this led to violence that left at least 9 people dead and dozens injured.–wikipedia
