In 1865-1866 two lines were built through Petersburg: The Kansas City Railroad Company's line from Topeka to Parsons and another company's line from Parsons to Shawnee County via Norfolk Southern Railway Station at Westport Junction (now Olathe). At this time there were no more than 20 people living in Petersburg; by 1880 its population had swollen to 150 due largely to oil exploration activity nearby which created many jobs for local citizens as well as business owners who invested in petrochemical production facilities near Petersburg proper (). By 1895 over 1,000 people lived in Petersburg with 500 businesses employing almost 2200 locals (). When Interstate 70 bypassed downtown Kansas City in 1973 most businesses closed along I-70 leaving only a few dozen locals employed within 100 yards of their establishments before they too left along I-70
