The first bishop of Missouri, James Fenton, arrived in St. Peters in 1830 and began construction on what would become the Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace (now called St. John’s Cathedral). During the American Civil War, much activity took place within or around St. Peters as soldiers gathered there for battle or refuge between 1861 and 1865. On April 11th, 1865, while Union forces were besieging Confederate General Robert Ewing at Pea Ridge Battlefield near present-day Springfield, Missouri, Confederate general Nathan Bedford Forrest surrendered his army under terms that none other than Abraham Lincoln should be given control over all military matters in Missouri. As a result of this event, Saint Peters became one of only two cities in America (the other being Norfolk) where members of both victorious armies mingled and exchanged news after each engagement
On July 4, 1871, a group of Missouri men and women Declaration of Independence supporters gathered on the west side of St. Peters from where they would march to the state capital, Jefferson City. The event was called "The Battle for Independence." The men and women had prepared for weeks and were successful in achieving their goal as they faced off against an opposing force made up of soldiers from neighboring Kentucky and Missouri. After several hours of fighting, the Missourians emerged victorious and became the first state in America to secede from the Union.
