St. Peters, Missouri was founded in 1764 by the French Catholics as a small trading post on theMissouri River. The town quickly became a hub of Catholic culture and commerce, and soon became one of the most important settlements in central Missouri. In 1821, St. Peters was annexed by Hannibal, Missouri, making it the second largest city in that state after Jefferson City. It continued to grow rapidly until the railroads arrived in 1849 and hastened its decline. Today, St. Peters is a small unassuming town located just east of Hannibal on Route 66. The history of St. Peters begins with an interesting mix of French Catholicism and German Protestantism - two cultures that worked together for many years to create a successful community side by side. In 1764, Father Jacques Marquette led his group of Jesuit missionaries from Quebec to explore what lay beyond the Great Lakes region before reaching Missouri’s large crescent-shaped river basin. Heading northward into what is now western Kansas and eastern Nebraska, he discovered fresh water sources and valuable land that would become part of modern-day St. Louis County and Missouri’s capital city – Saint Joseph County today! With new water resources at his doorstep and friendly Native American tribes living nearby (the Osage were particularly helpful), Father Marquette quickly realized that this was only the beginning for Saint Peter’s Creek; he named his new settlement after himself – Saint Pierre de la Ronde (or “Saint Peter’s Hill”). Over time, other priests followed Father Marquette to help develop this fledgling village into an important center for Catholic culture in central Missouri – including Blessed Alphonsus Liguori who served as pastor from 1794-1810; Fray Francisco Xavier Alonso de Arana y Gómez who served from 1812-1814; Bishop José Gilberto Rivera y Avilés who served from 1820-1824;and finally Bishop Augustin Gomez y Peña who served from 1830-1834! Bishop Gomez also helped establish seminaries throughout central Missouri which continues to play an important role in Catholic education today; such as Immaculate Conception Seminary which opened in 1836 on land donated by General James Kappenberg; Sacred Heart Seminary which began operation in 1840 on land donated by Nicholas Cage; and John MacBride Seminary whichopened its doors in 1954! The religious life here was colorful and vibrant during these years with many famous converts coming through: Ignatius Donnelly came to STL from Ireland arriving around 1800; Blessed John Henry Newman arrived here between 1854-1855 aboard the USS Constitution under Captain William Dickey); Thomas Moore celebrated Mass here (later Archbishop) on October 15th 1860 while onboard ship SS Americabound off California coast); Marie Stopes preached her first sermon at STL Church on December 12th 1865 while still aboard ship SS United Statesof America! Many people who found success within Catholicism later left this tightknit community behind them when they converted or were called away to serve elsewhere within the church hierarchy – such as Mother Teresa ( whom we will talk about later ); but others built strong roots here including: Driscoll Brothers whose paper mills produced high quality paper until they closed down around 1930 ; Frisco Tire Co.; several banks including First National Bank & Trust Company ; local physician James Hennessey Sr.; Mayor Robert Peebles ; businessmen Harry S Truman & Wilbur Wright Jr.; Congressman Emanuel Celler ; businessman Hal Clement & wife Hazel Clement ; Reverend Clifford Olson ; Driscoll Sisters founded their own convent & school outside STL late 1960s) . In 1850 Union troops marched into central Missouri following Mexico’s victory over France atcriptions Battle Of Buena Vista Field near present day Independence Heights . Afternoon prayers were offered for Mexican general Santa Anna inside Holy Rosary Cathedral where General Zachary Taylor had recently been installed as president . On September 10th 1850 Union forces burned down homes along Main Street near present day Park Avenue south of downtown Hannibal while soldiers looted cars parked along US 6 .. Three days later wagon trains carrying supplies Barry Goldwater had organized via stagecoach arrive at Saint Peters Creek Landing .. On October 3rd 1850 gold coins worth $1 each were found hidden among stacks of haystack manure near present day Ballpark Drive east of downtown Hannibal .. Army Colonel John J Reynolds rode into town atop horseback wearing nothing but pants saying “This is not a military camp–This is my home”following orders long placed with caution against any release of public information without specific clearance .. immediately upon hearing Reynolds arrival officials ordered all males age 16 or older arrested without trial .... For three weeks no food or water was given to inmates housed inside these walls .... Notwithstanding objections made by some guards Commandant Charles Bowen authorized summary executions using rifles across all categories ........... Unhappy with conditions within prison authorities ordered women be employed minding kitchen gardens giving them shelterfrom rifle fire ...... Most inmates died due primarily to pneumonia contracted while confined indoors .............. Guards used shotguns rather than rifles duringahankey executions ...... By November 1st most prisoners had perished ... more than 2200 men incarcerated at Fort Leavenworth during early 1860's maximum size
St. Peters was founded in 1838 by Frenchmen, and named for the apostle Peter. The city grew rapidly during the late 19th century, becoming one of the largest in Missouri. In 1924, St. Peters became an independent city and has since grown into a cultural and commercial center for the region.
