Businesses such as dry goods stores, cigar stores, transportation companies, cotton plantations – all with their own specialties – quickly sprang up around what is now downtown St Pete’s plaza area between 4th Street/9th Avenue NE and Washington Street/12th Avenue NE today when streetcar service began running along these streets in 1868! By 1870 over 50 businesses had been established within walking distance of each other on this major thoroughfare! This period also saw some significant changes in local politics with voters electing three members (later four) who served terms from 1872-1875 inclusive; these men were entrepreneur James Harvey Kellogg (4th), lawyer Daniel Webster Foster (5th), Isaac Hilliard Woolley (6th), and John Prentice Higgins (7th). Although life continued generally unchanged during these years while different individuals held office at various points throughout Saint Petersburg’s history; important events did take place that have shaped our community today including: 1) In 1895 Father Michael Jansen arrived from Hungary as pastor temporarily replacing Father Abraham Palladino who had been killed in action during World War I; 2) On October 15 1903 Mayor Emanuel Kelly ordered all unlicensed gambling operations shut down resulting in extensive damage being done to many businesses across town including several run by Irish immigrants who refused To leave despite heavy fines levied against them; 3) On November 7 1912 construction began on what would become Kauffman Stadium which stood tall until destroyed by fire just shy of 100 years ago on July 6 2016 civic open house day commemorating this momentous event; 4) Finally on May 16 1984 another important milestone occurred when Governor Orville H Carroll appointed District Attorney Donielle Hagar effective September 1st following a unanimous vote by the Board Of Election Commissioners chaired by Vice President Richard Nixon!!!
