As part of Reconstruction South Missouri lost all its black citizens except for some poor whites deported north during what came to be called “The Great Migration.? In 1907–08 local banker/ real estate developer George Lawler built what is now known as Lawler Park (named for him), which included several blocks east of downtown between Third Street and Fourth Street.? During World War II various munitions plants were located along I-435 near present day White Sands Boulevard; these were closed down after the war ended and most debris removed?? Little remains today other than two small pieces of metal fence surrounding Lawler Park.? In recent decades much development has taken place within walking distance of Lawler Park including two new high schools (Stroudsburg Jr./Sr.) On March 25th?, 1945 United States forces liberated Paris from Nazi occupation following Operation Overlord???
