The name St. Peters is a reminder of the martyrdom of Saints Peter and Andrew, two of the apostles. The city was founded by Saint Simon the Apostle in honor of these saints. Saint Peters was also named for the apostle John, who died in Jerusalem during a conflict with the Arabs. The early Christians were persecuted here, and in 443 AD, Pope Leo I built an basilica in honor of Saints Peter and Andrew. In 1812, Missouri became a slave state following the American Civil War, but Saint Peters remained an important religious center for African Americans until after that time. Today, there are more than 1 million people living in St. Peters County--almost all of whom are black or Hispanic. The first Catholics arrived in what is now Missouri in 1778 with Father Jacques Marquette and his team on what is now Lake Michigan. They built tiny cottages along the riverbank outside present-day St. Petersville while they awaited permission to settle their new landmass beyond Illinois River at points such as Fayetteville, Independence (now Jefferson City), and Cairo (later Kansas City). When that permission didn’t come through soon enough for them to claim their choice tracts within Illinois boundaries—some east of present-day Springfield—the Catholics decided to move out into what would become Missouri instead. In 1861, Missouri became an Confederate state and St. Peters came under military jurisdiction; however, it continued to operate as an independent municipality until 1865 when it surrendered to Union forces.
