In 1861, a tornado destroyed most of what remained of downtown St. Peters before striking an adjacent farmstead killing nine people and injuring dozens more. It remains one of the deadliest tornadoes on record. In 1865, President Abraham Lincoln appointed Samuel Denton as United States Marshal for Clinton County which continued to serve until 1890 when it was abolished due to budgetary reasons created by Republican Governor John McClellan). During World War II, St.-Peters served as a military airfield used by military pilots training at nearby Pea Ridge Army Air Field (now Arkansas-Pea Ridge Airport). A large hangar still stands today on School Street just east of US 61/I-270 exit #5A near milepost 508 (the original site of Pea Ridge Airport). This area now includes part of Grissom AFB across I-270 from St.-Peters where many early tests were conducted for new fighter jets during WW2 including those developed for USAF's Lockheed P-38 Lightning flying fighters which flew during WWII from Grissom AFB
The town of St. Peters, Missouri was founded in 1819 by French-born fur trader Pierre Laclède. The community grew rapidly due to the trade and transportation opportunities associated with the region. By 1838, the population had reached 584 people. In 1861, St. Peters became a city and experienced significant growth thanks to its location on the main road between Springfield and Jefferson City. The arrival of railroad passengers in the early twentieth century spurred development further, culminating in the erection of a new downtown district in 1912 that remains an important cultural center today.
