TheArmory of America on Grand Boulevard became one of the largest handgun dealers in the United States during this time period. In 1954, Gun Control Act of 1934 was passed into law and made it illegal to sell orimport handguns without a license from a federally licensed dealer. As a result of this legislation, most of the existing handgun dealers closed their doors within a few years; however, Armory of America continued to operate until 1966 when it merged with Kleck & Company Incorporated to form Continental Firearms Corporation (CFC). At CFC’s inception all firearms sales were conducted through mail order only. In 1968-1969 CFC erected two large metal detectors at its entrance alongside a metal detector check point inside each store; these devices were intended to prevent theft by criminals who could easily remove firearms from storage containers by cutting open the locks/bars that secured them within reach for thieves outside access. However, due to high crime rates in St Louis during this time period these measures did not completely successful as firearms remained an important part of crime prevention strategies for many years thereafter until they were replaced by more sophisticated security features such as fast check points/integrated scanners/keyless entry systems following terrorist attacks such as September 11th 2001 which led to increased firearm thefts throughout much of North America includingStLouisMo
