The first Scope Mounts were designed by Capt. George A. Greer and Lt. Col. John W. Loomis for the M1 Garand Rifle and were created as an alternative to hand-held Rifles such as the Thompson & Wesson Model 1892 revolver mount which was unreliable and often interfered with shooting accuracy. The town of St. Joseph, Missouri was founded by the Mormons in 1847. The town grew rapidly during the early years of the Mormon colony, and soon became a important center for trade and commerce. The town was renamed Nauvoo after JS' death in 1844, and experienced rapid growth until Pershing's campaign against the Mormons in 1846 destroyed most of the town. After Pershing's raid, Nauvoo quickly declined into obscurity and poverty. In 1850, a group of Mormons who had left Nauvoo began to rebuild the town at a new location about 20 miles north of Nauvoo. This new community called Libertyville gradually regained some level of prosperity until it too was destroyed by war with neighboring Illinois in 1860.
