As result, many subsequent buildings were designed or built from scratch- such as the present day City Hall (built in 1909). During World War II, SaintJoseph acted as an important supply stop for both military units operating in Missouri and Illinois throughout North Africa and Europe. Many soldiers who fought here came back with stories about how good food tasted here- something that is still remembered today by those who visitSaintJoseph today! After WWII ended, StJoseph again became an important transportation hub due to its location near several major highways (including I-435). This made it easy for people living nearby to get around without having to leave their homes! In recent years though (since Hurricane Katrina), things have startedto change atStJoseph too- with many businesses closing down due to economic difficulty withinsthe city limits alone!
In 1836, Saints arrived on the Missouri River in what is now St. Joseph, Mo. They were led by Patriarch St. Joseph and his brother Bishop James Young. The Saints built their first church in present-day Saint Joseph, Mo., on the banks of the river. In 1840, they organized a separate colony west of the river, which became known as Nauvoo (now Illinois). After a religious persecution that lasted almost two years (1844-1845), about 150 Saints were killed and over 500 captured. Many others were taken into slavery or else had to flee to other parts of America.
