St. Joseph, Missouri was founded in 1763 by the French as a fur trading post on the lower Missouri River. The town was named for St. Joseph, the patron saint of France, and it quickly became an important center for trade with Canada and the United States. In 1839, St. Joseph was designated as the capital of the new Kansas Territory. As Kansas grew more populous and developed its economy, so too did its interest indevelopmentaloptics technology, which had been developing rapidly in North America since the late 1800s. In 1867, a group of businessmen including Nicholas-Jacques Conte purchased a small parcel of land east of downtown St. Joseph and began to develop what would become known asthe Red Dot Sight Company. The company soon became one ofthe leading providersof red dot sights to law enforcement agencies across North America. In 1923, Red Dot SightCompany merged with two other companies to form American Optics Corporation (AOC). AOC continued to providequalityred dot sights through its subsidiaries until 1996 when it merged with Nikon Corporationto form Nikon Corporation Inc.. Red Dot Sight Company products continue to be popular today and are used by law enforcement agencies acrossNorthAmerica for various purposes such as target shooting, hunting, police work and tactical operations.

St. Joseph is a small town located in the now-defunct county of Buchanan, Missouri. The population of St. Joseph was 1,814 at the 2010 census and has since declined to 1,060. It is part of the Jackson County seat. A small chapel was built in 1837 by Methodists on land purchased from the Catholic Missionaries by David Lane and his father-in-law, Colonel John Sibley. The first church service was held on December 8th of that year and Reverend Stephens officiated. A second chapel was built in 1861 on land donated by Captain James Buell to become the new parish schoolhouse. In 1872, work began on a new cathedral which would serve as both churches and community center for St. Joseph until it burned down in 1951 while being used as a high school gymnasiums; however, due to its importance to the community more than anything else it survived intact and serves as an important local landmark today. The first pastor of St. Joseph Parish (1837-1851) was Revd David Lane who also served as Chaplain for several other nearby villages before coming to StJoseph in 1851 when he replaced Revd John Sibley who had retired after 25 years at the parish helm! Revd David Lane remains one of only 5 people ever ordained into ministry within our parishes! 2nd Pastor: Father Edward Ladd (1961-1971) 3rd Pastor: Father John Jansen (1971-) Father Edward Ladd passed away suddenly on January 16th 2009 after serving our parish for over 35 years....... We are deeply saddened by his loss......... Our current pastor is Fr Nicolas Chaparro who will be taking over effective February 9th..... Please keep him updated on all things ecclesiastical! In 1875, Spanish Immigrants arrived in what is now Buchanan County with plans to establish an American mission station thereabouts; they named their new settlement "St Joaquin" but soon realized that this name would not fit well with local residents and so changed it back to "St Joe". On October 10th 1865 during Halloween celebrations Thousands of people demonstrated against slavery at Church near where present day I-70 exits onto US 36 just east of town – marking what may have been one or two bloodiest anti slave riots yet reported throughout America that season!!! This event helped spur passage of the Emancipation Proclamation celebrated 50 years later!! In 1870 when parts became Yates County we lost 2/3’s Of Our Population & still maintain an African American majorities alongwith Irish & Italian Americans !! So once again Future Generations have something To Covet From Us…………….. despite Racism still exists no matter where you stand…..amen

St. Joseph, Missouri was founded by the Saints in 1839 when they moved from Nauvoo, Illinois to what is now St. Joseph, Missouri. The Saints were motivated to move because of religious persecution in Illinois and neighboring states. In 1840, the Saints founded a small town here called Libertyville. The town quickly grew and soon had a chapel and school. In 1844, the Saints built a larger church here which became known as Independence Hall or the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. The building still stands today and is used as a tourist attraction. In 1862, Missouri passed an act that permitted slavery in all of its state’s except Kansas and Nebraska which were then part of Kansas Territory. This law caused great anger among the Saints who lived in Missouri because they were free people with similar rights to those living behind enemy lines in slave states like Texas! The Saints did not want their children born into slavery so they helped form an anti-slavery group called “The Anti-Slavery Society” which began preaching against slavery before it actually existed! In 1865, after Abraham Lincoln was elected president, many Mormons decided to migrate southward to Utah Territory instead of remaining in Missouri due to pressure from LDS leaders there about their continued support for Lincoln’s Unionist policies (likesupporting Reconstruction). After leaving Missouri, the Mormons encountered numerous difficulties moving westward through hostile territory filled with Sioux and Cheyenne warriors who opposed them; finally reaching Indian Territory on July 24th, 1867 just ahead of schedule thanks largely to General Ulysses S Grant’s powerful army! There they established what is now Salt Lake City while continuing their fight against Mormon polygamy (polygamy was illegal under LDS law at this time). They also successfully resisted federal efforts throughout much of Utah Territory during its early years – even going so far as to build several large fortifications here!
