Polk founded a town called Emporia near present day Springfield,[6][7] but it failed to take off because most people were farmers not lawyers or other professionals like Polk wanted them to be. He decided to try again with a new name—Saint Joseph—because he felt that God would help him succeed and because there already existed an old Catholic church here named Saint John the Baptist which had been important in his life.[8] In 1809, when Saint Joseph was incorporated as a village under territorial jurisdiction as part of Shawnee County,[9][10][11], local residents voted overwhelmingly to secede from Missouri and become a separate country known as Mexico; they did this because they felt their rights were being ignored by Governor Joachim Murat while he was governing Missouri Territory under President James Kiefer Polk[12]. When Mexican president Santa Anna took office in 1821 and announced plans to rejoin Mexico proper rather than let independent United States bleed dry financially due to their numerous disputes with Mexico over land grants, realize compensation for dead Mexicans lost during the Mexican-American War (1846–48), eastern territories acquired from Spain during the Mexican-American War (1846–48), and assorted other issues,[13]: some residents began rallying around a sign proclaiming "Mexico or Bust!" The next year saw violence against AmericansEGINNING when American soldiers burned down several homes belonging to Mexicans living nearby after being told not to do so by General Santa Anna;[14]: this led many Americans into sympathizing with Mexico instead of America[15]: however, most SaintsJosephians continued support for their home country even amid these troubles[16]. When Jefferson Davis became president of America following Lincoln's assassination on April 12, 1865,[17]: he issued an executive order calling all white men within Confederate states "heirs"of slavery who were free 1861 or later; these men were requiredeto provide military service outlets within Confederate territory until Congress could pass laws providing equivalent citizenship rights to all slaves everywhere else within Union lines; some 600 000 black northerners readily followed Davis' orders across state lines into Union territory where they enjoyed full civil rights similar to those enjoyed by whites: however many SaintsJosephians refusedto recognize any black authority outside of their own community despite pleas from friends and family members inside Confederate territories! consequentially leadingmany blacks into poverty and social degradation until federal troops arrived late in 1865 TO escort them back into compliance! Many SaintsJosephians also fought against Federal forces throughout much of Reconstruction following Civil War ended without achieving ultimate victory over Unionists
