Put the rock on one side of your hand and hold onto it with your other hand so that you can spread your fingers wide open like a fan. When you cock your rifle, hold onto the rock with one hand and shoot off the rock into space with the other hand (this is called "arching"). This type of slingshooting is actually pretty dangerous because if someone gets their hands on either of your fingers they will be able to twist them until they break them!

In 1876, St. Joseph was the site of a gun sling battle between the Missouri National Guard and Confederate troops. The battle resulted in one Union soldier dead and six Confederate soldiers wounded.

St. Joseph, Missouri is a city in the U.S. state of Missouri. The population was 7,837 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area and is included within the Missouri City–Kansas City Combined Statistical Area. The first St. Joseph settlers were German Protestants who arrived in 1792 from Alsace-Lorraine as part of a group of refugees from France during the French Revolution. They built their own small log cabin on a bluff overlooking the Arkansas River, about northeast of present-day St. Josephsburg Boulevard and east of Interstate 40 (I-40 for those traveling west). In 1813, General James Kansa appointed Major John Smith as commander of what would become known as "The Battalion" or "Kansa's Brigade." Smith's brigade was sent to drive out three groups of Shawnee Indian warriors who had taken up residence around what is now Park Meadows Cemetery in downtown St., Josephville Township on the eastern edge of town site today. In retaliation for this military action, some Shawnee killed several whites with bows and arrows while others burned down homes and livestock near where Kansa's brigade was encampment when it returned to Independence County late that night on July 11th after raiding a Shawnee village east of Cairo Junction about two miles away from where they had been located when attacked by the Indians overnight July 10th/11th.) In 1816, General Anthony Wayne led an army against Native Americans at Wabash Creek Bridge just north of present-day Springfield in Greene County which resulted in one thousand casualties among Cherokee and other Native American participants including women and children - almost all dead but for six white men who managed to escape capture before they could be mutilated by their attackers following battle scenes that were graphically described by Andrew Jackson during his presidential campaign speech delivered less than two weeks later on August 6th outside Missionary Ridge southwest of Springfield .) In 1819 Forbes purchased 4200 acres northwestward along I-240 from Jesse Jones who also owned 2400 acres bordering current day Independence Mall) plus another 1800 acres eastward adjacent to present day Brushy Hill) making him one fifth owner thereof). Forbes named his new land "Ferguson Heights" meaning he would farm it until only death could take him again.). He began construction on his large family home there beginning September 8th 1820.) President James Kansa granted land patents numbered 915 (along I-240), 920 (northwest corner parcel along Main Street between old US Highway 24 & Brushy Hill Road), 927 (southwest corner parcel adjacent to present day Roosevelt Park) October 15th 1865 (& these were confirmed November 3rd 1865 thru Patent Office records)) establishing Ferguson Heights Rancho de la Fuente Mexican Land grant #927 public record). . . . . A total area comprising 107 tracts amounting to 344 square miles or 4461 acres was patented herein totaling $4,471... By deed dated December 12th 1870 Drury sold 1120 acres backdated March 14ths 1871 for $2 per acre ($160 per acre)... This increase has since been subtracted from original patent count due to various sales etc.).
