However, when Sibley discovered that some members of his force were Muslim Indians, he instructed his men not to hurt them unless they attacked first. As a result, over 100 Christian natives died during this raid. This event has been called one of America's most destructive campaigns against Native Americans. The Town of Saints continued to grow until it reached its peak in 1860 when it had a population of 1,500 people. By 1870 however, Saint Joseph had fallen victim to economic decline and social unrest caused by geographic isolation from larger towns and cities in Illinois and Kansas City respectively. The population declined rapidly throughout the 20th century until it finally fell below 500 people by 2000; however, it remains an active cultural center for those living near it today.
St. Joseph, Missouri is an American city in the Ozarks region of the Midwestern United States. The population was 24,513 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of St. Joseph County and is located on the southern bank of the Arkansas River. The first European settlement in what is now St. Joseph County was by French fur traders in 1777, and it became a part of Mexico after its independence from Spain in 1821. In 1836, General James K. Polk moved Ulysses S Grant's army from Springfield to Memphis to invade Texas and drive out Mexico's forces from that territory (the Mexican-American War). General Polk's army camped along the river at Camp Chase near present-day St. Joseph for three weeks during July and August 1836 while he awaited reinforcements from Illinois via Missouri under Major General Augustus Dennison. On September 3, 1836, Ulysses S Grant arrived at Camp Chase with 10,000 men and took up his position downstream on the river opposite Mexico City where he prepared to launch an attack against Mexican forces entrenched along both banks of the river
