The first settlement in what is now St. Joseph was made by Italian immigrants in 1831 and soon became an important stop on the route between Nauvoo, Ill., and Council Bluffs, Iowa. In 1838, Pope Pius IX called for all Catholics living within the newly organized Missouri Territory to move to that area because of its rich religious and cultural heritage. In 1840, when most of the rest of Missouri was acquired by Kansas Territorial Governor James K. Polk during their Compromise of 1850, St. Joseph remained part of Illinois and received no statehood until 1861 when it joined Kansas as part of the Union side in the American Civil War. After the war ended in 1865, many people from North Dakota moved into what is now northwestern Missouri due to new opportunities brought about by Reconstruction following slavery's end throughout much of America. They set up businesses and churches here among other things before finally moving out when white flight began to occur after World War II ended African American integration nationwide (and especially within Southern California). In 1831, the first Catholic congregation in St. Joseph, Missouri was organized with Father Michael Ryan as its pastor. Father Ryan served until 1846 when he moved to a new site in town and died there. The parish continued to function under the leadership of Fathers John McMahon and Michael Collins until 1881 when it merged with another parish in town, Holy Cross Parish. The merger resulted in much Protestant church construction taking place within range of the old Catholic church on what is now State Street. This pattern continued until about 1925 when Catholics completely retreated from St. Joseph after World War I destroyed many of their churches and other infrastructure.
