Saint Joseph, Missouri is a town in St. Joseph County, Missouri, United States. The population was 2,651 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hannibal-St. Louis Metro Area. The first permanently settled area in what is now St. Joseph County was on the banks of the White River where French fur traders built their trading posts from 1778 to 1785 and then sold goods they brought back upriver to France for sale to Native Americans. This section of present-day Saint Joseph County was laid out by George Rogers Clark in 1805 as portions of that county lay within his western boundary (the latter including much of northeastern Illinois). Francis Xavier Chauncy founded a Catholic mission at Mission Point on the White River in 1815 and named it after SaintJoseph, leader ofnd missionaries to America during the age of religious revivalism in Europe which began in 1802 with Francis Asbury's American Friends Meeting House movement. In 1827, Peter Kuykendall donated land north and east of Mission Point for a new Roman Catholic church; construction began on that church - called "Kuykendall's Chapel" - soon afterward and completed in 1830. In 1840, when Saint Joe Parish was organized from parts of Clearwater Township and some other townships within St Joe County, Father John Dolan became its first pastor; he served until 1850 when he moved to Rome due to ill health but returned later that year to take over as pastor at Kuykendall's Chapel where he remained until his death on October 24th 1888. During Father Dolan's time as pastor there were also several important changes taking place among Catholics living near Independence: The first seminary class graduated from Mount Zion Seminary in 1846; Jane Addams founded her own girls' school nearby; Patrick J O'Connell established Pius IX High School (now Parkview Senior High School) adjacent to Kuykendall's Chapel; while Methodists began building churches around Independence beginning in the late 1840s there were still relatively few people among them who wanted anything really badto happen about their denomination hereabouts... The growth potential for Catholicism within this small area seemed moot because no one wanted or could afford priests... so instead various functions such as pastoral work or social services were outsourced through secular organizations like Sisters Annunciation (1862), Sacred Heart (1864), Blessed Sacrament Society (1868), Poor Clare Home for Women (1871), First Congregationalist Church (founded 1870) and Irish Apostolate for Foreign Missions (founded 1889). From 1865 until his death Fr John Hynes chaired what would come to be known as "The Committee on Indian Affairs". It wasn't until 1862 when Bishop Daniel MacNeill erected an initial frame addition(later replaced by a more elaborate brick structure)to Our Lady Queen Of Peace Shrine located just east off State Route 59 between Carthage Road/Old National Pike exit 57A&57B southbound & Old National Pike exit 58 northbound which served as both parish hall & primary school before being taken over by Holy Name Cathedral & eventually demolished c1940s?

The town grew rapidly and soon became the capital of what would become the Illinois Territory. In 1839, General James H. Carlin moved the capital to Springfield, Illinois, after Ulysses S. Grant was elected president that year. In 1845, St. Joseph merged with other towns in central Missouri to form the new city of Kansas City.
