St. Joseph, Missouri is a small town located in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. The population was 7,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-Farmington Metropolitan Statistical Area and is included within the Springfield-Harrisonburg-Lincoln and Hannibal–Springfield Combined Statistical Areas. The town was founded in 1838 by French immigrants who named it for Saint Joseph, the patron saint of France. The first settler was Jean Baptiste Crespin. A post office was established in 1839, and a hotel opened in 1840. In 1850, a church was built; it became a coeducational parish house in 1865 and an all-male Catholic church from 1888 to 1909. In 1907, the local school district merged with other districts to form the St. Louis County School District; St. Joseph Elementary School remained open until 1983 when it closed due to budgetary problems (it reopened as Holy Cross Middle School). In 1954, StJoseph Elementary School closed because of budget cuts which also affected neighboring schools; Holy Cross Middle School reopened that year as an all-girls middle school under new name: Jesuit High Schools (now HSLD) after one of its alumni donated land on which they would build their own high school building on what is now Park Avenue NE corner of West Jefferson Boulevard and North Huron Boulevard across from Catholic High School proper (now Cardinal Newman High School). The current high school building opened in 1972 as Francis Jansen Intermediate/Secondary Center complex housing grades 6 through 8 along with six elementary buildings including two buildings used for daycare services during morning rush hours from 1978 to 1985 when both elementary schools were converted into junior/senior high schools), three auxiliary buildings (one for music production purposes housed inside old electrical substation west of Main Street), eight parking spaces near main entrance off Park Ave., four tennis courts near main entrance off Park Ave., two football fields adjoining gymnasiums adjacent to gymnasiums - making it one of the largest primary school complexes in Missouri outside Columbia Heights or Ferguson Hills public schools - one large multicomponent garage next to each wing containing classrooms/lockers/ lockers for staff members plus common areas such as bathrooms/kitchensette area facing east court past driveway leading into alley running behind gym complex housing girls' locker rooms on second floor followed by men's locker rooms on first floor before upper level has office space including meeting room offices used by guidance counselors as well as physical education & health classes currently shared between Jesuit HS Girls Lacrosse teams indoor track & field operations includes wrestling class taught indoors during warmups weekdays lunchtime Friday afternoon incorporating Physical Education Coaching program offered full time since 2007
