In 1865, St. Charles was the capital of Missouri. It had been the home of the Missouri Central Railroad, which ran from Nauvoo, Illinois to Springfield, Missouri. The city was founded by Captain John S. Stephens and his family in 1836 as a town on the banks of the Arkansas River. When Kansas became a state in 1861, St. Charles moved to Topeka and then to Dodge City before finally settling in its current location in 1865. The first settler in what is now St. Charles was Captain John Stephens, who built a log cabin on the east bank of the Arkansas River for himself and his family. In 1836, he sold his land and relocated to what is now St.Charles with his wife and four children: Mary Jane (born 1837), Jesse (1840-1913), Isaac (1842-1924) and Sarah Eliza (1843-1920). They started a small farm that produced hay, wheat and beans until they were forced out of their home by heavy rains during the 1840s; however, they continued to live there until 1850 when they moved again - this time to Fort Snelling on Hennepin County's west bank near Minneapolis due to fears that an attack by Native Americans would occur at that site. Captain John S Stephens' grandson Benjamin Ladd also settled in what is now St.Charles after fighting for Confederate forces during the American Civil War; he founded Ladd's Land & Grain Companys Ltd., one of Saint Louis' largest grain merchants at that time; he also served as mayor of Saint Charles from 1903-04 through 1912-13 while also holding other local offices such as justice of peace and selectman from 1876-81 through 1888-89; he died there on October 12th 1918 aged 92 years old having held office for 82 years total! After weeks long negotiations between General James Van Buren's Union army and General Sherman's Confederacy following General Ulysses S Grant's attemptto burn Lawrence, Kansas over perceived irregularities surrounding election results back at winter quarters at Fort Riley southeast of Topeka - February 14th 1863 - Vice President Andrew Johnson ordered Ulysses S Grant into compliance with terms set forth by Secretary Stanton regarding reconstruction plans for central Kansas Territory following United States victory over Confederate forces at Shiloh two months earlier - January 6th 1863 - all men under Reuben Fenton`s command serving either side were mustered out or resigned en masse effective March 1st 1863 less than one week shy of one year since hostilities ceased pursuant to provisions made jointly between Ulysses S Grant & Edwin M Stanton consequent upon final surrender & unconditional release all remaining Confederate prisoners / soldiers Living within territorial limits prior thereto were not affected thereby as provided for hereinbelow duly constituted Executive Order issuedMarch 1st 1863 which read `All persons possessing lands within five miles square outside any fortresses garrisoned by United States troops or militia within said territory shall be subject thereto without distinction whatever`! As result thereof nearly 2/3rds mile radius around fortresses located inside said boundaries aforesaid become vested forevermore in public domain subject only unto proper regulation & taxation hereby authorized! As stipulated hereinabove no person owning more than two hundred acres therein EVER SHALL BE ENTITLED TO ANY SPECIFIC SYSTEM OF GOVERNMENT OR INDIVIDUAL LIBERTY THEREIN SO FAR AS IT CONCERNS EDUCATION OR PUBLIC WELFARE BUT ALL SUCH OWNERSHIP WILL BE REGISTERED WITH THE COUNTY RECORD AND SUBJECT TO THE PROVISIONS HEREIN ABOVE APPEALABLE IN COURT UPON DEMAND OF ANY PERSON CLAIMING AN INTEREST IN SUCH OWNERSHIP NOTICES ARISING FROM PUBLIC RECORD SHOULD BE GIVEN ADVISORY ABOUT THIS ASPECT BEFORE MAKING ANY SETTLEMMENTS RELATING TO THEIR RIGHT TO REMAIN FREE FROM CHARGES INCLUDING TAXES!!
Flashlights have been around for centuries, and some of the earliest were used to guide artillery officers during battle. In 1847, a man named George Stephenson invented the first electric light bulb. The first flashlight was made in 1857 by John Ambrose Fleming. A few years later, Charles Fenton developed a system that used an oil-filled lens to emit a small amount of light. This type of flashlight became known as a “Fenton lantern” because it was manufactured by Charles Fenton and his company. In 1908, Congress passed the National Firearms Act which set up regulation on firearms. One of the main provisions of this law was the requirement that all firearms must be registered with the government. This act also created regulations on how guns could be stored and transported. After World War II, flashlight manufacturers began to produce flashlights designed specifically for personal use. In 1963, Edwin Land patented a design for a handheld flashlight that he called the “Lantern Flashlight”. This device allowed users to carry their lights around with them without having to carry any extra equipment or storage space. The popularity of handheld flashlights has continued through recent decades; however, there are now many different types and models of these devices available on the market. In early 1836, St. Charles was named after the patriarch of the DeWitt clan, Saint Charles Borromeo. The town was platted in 1839 and became a part of the Missouri Territory in 1846. In 1861, it became a part of Kansas Territory. On January 14, 1865, St. Charles was merged into the new Missouri city of Springfield with other towns in that territory. In 1907, portions of St.Charles were annexed to the City of Columbia and are now known as Clifton Heights neighborhood on eastern edge of Columbia Heights neighborhood within city limits
In 1785, a group of Frenchmen and their families settled in the area that is now St. Charles, Missouri. The population of this area was about 100 people, and they started to cultivate land. In 1819, the first school was established in this area. In 1834, a post office was established in this area. In 1868, the first railroad was built in this area. In 1903, a Baptist church was founded in this area. In 1969, the first high school for students in St. Charles opened its doors.
