One of the most famous astronomers who used optics to observation was Sir John Herschel who developed his 4” reflector telescope at Hertfordshire University in 1828. This instrument allowed him to discover elements other than hydrogen and helium which were later verified through modern technology. In 1892, Reverend George White organized an event called “The Great Scopetake” which featured six amateur astronomers from across Missouri taking turns using their home scopes to view objects located near Springfield, Missouri including Mount Rushmore National Monument and Cairo Hill Observatory! This event helped popularize amateur astronomy within Missouri and beyond!

In 1896-1897, Julius Croll built two telescopes at Plumstead Bluff near Mount Rushmore National Monument for use by the Smithsonian Institution’s American Museum of Natural History (AMS). These scopes are now known as the Julia Robinson Telescope and are among the most famous astronomical instruments ever assembled. Additionally, during this time period several businesses were established including Scopes Optical Workshops & Instrument Shop (later renamed Scopes Instruments), Jochem's Pharmacy, Mrs Royden's Bakery & Cafe, and finally Griggs Hardware Store which continued until 1961 when it merged with Sears Roebuck & Co.'s appliance department to become Sears Home Improvement Stores

St. Charles became a parish in 1834 and was named for St. Charles Borromeo, the Archbishop of Mexico City who had come to Missouri to preach in 1823. The first church on the site was built in 1836 and served as the town's only building until it was replaced by a new church in 1893. In 1927, the parish moved from its original location on State Street to its current location on Ziegler Boulevard.
