The St. Charles community was founded in 1837 by General James Wilkinson and his wife, Catherine. The town was named after the biblical city of St. Charles, in present-day France. The Wilkinson family soon developed a prosperous mercantile business, and they became prominent in the community. In 1840, the Wilkinson family donated land to build a school and church in the town. The first school building was completed in 1845, and the first pastor was hired in 1851. In 1862, the town incorporated as a village. The population of St. Charles grew rapidly during its early years, reaching 100 residents by 1870. However, during the American Civil War (1861-1865), the town experienced significant violence and damage from fighting on both sides). In 1865, Captain James Hines arrived with 3 companies of Missouri Volunteers to help put down an uprising within the community led by John Gibbons (a local blacksmith). Aftermath of this event led to increased tension between white and black residents; some residents called for Hines' removal from office because he had failed to protect them from thugs working for Gibbons. As a result of this unrest, Radical Republicans began moving into positions of power within St.Charles; this change helped contribute to its decline over time. In recent years, much effort has been made to revive interest in St.Charles as a vibrant community withcosmopolitan elements; however, it remains limited geographically due to its proximity to Saint Louis metropolitan area
