Polk who served as President during the American Civil War (1865-1869). In 1871, General Polk donated land to make up what would become St.Charles Township and set out to establish a new community where farmers could live together in harmony with their fellow citizens. The first settler in St.Charles was Mr. Hickey who built his home on what would eventually become Main Street near present day Union Station/ Amtrak Train Station on July 24th, 1871.(1) The goal behind founding St.Charles was to provide an open society where individuals could work together without fear or retribution from each other.(2) This goal was fully realized by 1881 when government officials announced that all businesses within the township were required to open doorways to anyone who wanted to purchase goods.(3) At this point, St- Charles had come into being as an egalitarian society which reflected both its rural roots as well as its growing city status.(4) During World War II (1939-1945), much effort went into developing munitions factories withinSt-Charles’ limits which helped contribute significantly to Allied victory against Nazi Germany(5). However, following World War II ended with Victory House becoming operational once again housing displaced persons from Europe(6), many people decided that they should move back home rather than leave their homes behind again.

As suburban living became more popular throughout America during this time period(7), many people chose not to move back home but instead bought houses outside ofSt-Charles’ borders.

However, due largely to advances in technology(8), there have been recent efforts by developers withinthetownto revive portions of downtown Saint Charles which are now called “Downtown Saint Charles redevelopment district”.

Polk saw this location as an ideal spot for a new outpost because it afforded easy access to both railroads and water resources necessary for development downstream along the river valley. The town rapidly grew into a thriving community that attracted settlers from all over Ohio and Indiana Territory - including many fugitives from British tyranny during the American Revolution (see "Fugitive Settlers" below). In 1860, when Missouri seceded from the Union, St.Charles became part of Kansas City metropolitan area; however, it retained its independent status until 1977 when it merged with other Kansas City-area cities into what is nowKansas City-St .Joseph metropolitan area In 1897 activist Heywood Broun moved his headquarters to St .Charles after years spent campaigning against slavery in central America (see "Broun Campaign" below). Broun's work led to significant anti-slavery legislation being passed at state level throughout Illinois and Missouri between 1897 and 1902; however, these measures were not adopted within Kansas CITY-ST JOSEPH MUNICIPAL AREA due to resistance among local businesses/citizens opposed to integrated public education within their borders During World War II (1939 - 1945), much activity took place within or adjacent toKansas CITY-ST JOSEPH MUNICIPAL AREA due to wartime needs such as production lines for munitions manufacturing plants across town; military test ranges located nearby along I–10 Indian Road; etc., which required large areas surrounding KCSA be developed for housing purposes only about 1/4th full size map size...When hostilities ended there was little left physically or economically inside KCSA except abandoned buildings,...Following world war II most people either move away or leave completely taking everything they owned with them...Today very few people live inKCSA outsideof occasional visitors or retirees

The first St. Charles, Missouri post office was established in 1836, and the town became a county seat in 1849. The first courthouse was built in 1851, and the first school was organized in 1856. In 1860, the Union Pacific Railroad arrived in St.Charles with its initial line from Omaha to Kansas City; and as a result, much of the original business district around downtown disappeared when the city became an industrial center. However, many businesses remain today including KFC, Sears & Roebuck, Ford Motor Company (including John Fords dealership), Phillips 66 Refinery (which still exists), and Oldsmobile Corporation until it closed down in 2011.
