St. Charles, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks of southern Missouri. It was founded by John Jacob Astor in 1818 as a fur trader's outpost on the Arkansas River at what is now called Astoria Springs. The town grew rapidly during the early 1800s and by 1836 it had become an important stop on the Underground Railroad. In 1865, St. Charles was moved from its original location to nearby Florissant so that Union troops could bombastrengthily build Fort Sumter (now part of Jefferson City). The town declined after Reconstruction ended and fell into disrepair until it was revitalized in the late 1990s with help from investors including Dick Cheney and Bill Gates. In recent years, St.Charles has seen increased tourism due to its unique history, plantations dating back to the 1830s, and interesting architecture such as the Masonic Temple and Its Cathedrals which were built between 1840-1850.
St. Charles was founded in 1763 by French fur traders as a trading post on the Great Western Trail. The town grew rapidly and soon had a population of over 400 people. In 1803, St. Charles became a county seat and was known as the "Town of Vesta." The town was renamed Saint Charles in 1836 after the saint who is considered to be the patron saint of Missouri.
