Today's Catholic community makes up over 60% of the overall population with priests serving out separate parishes throughout town – including four apostolic vicars who lead all six churches plus two mission stations - including one exclusively dedicated to migrant workers!

In 1821, the United States Congress passed a bill to create St. Charles County. The county was named for General James K. Polk, who had fought in the Mexican-American War and been nominated as President of Mexico by then-Senator John Quincy Adams. On July 1, 1825, the county seat was moved from Nauvoo to St. Charles because Nauvoo's population had dwindled so rapidly after polygamy became legal in Illinois that it could no longer support its own government. The first courthouse in St. Charles County was built on the former site of Carthage College in 1829. The courthouse burned down in 1841 but was rebuilt and completed in 1846. The Courthouse Annex building also served as a courthouse until 1924 when it was replaced by the current Judicial Center building on Main Street east of Park Avenue. The first school district within St. Charles County was organized on November 25, 1830, when citizens of Nauvoo petitioned the Board of Education to create a school district for their community. The first schoolhouse in town was built near the corner of Second and Randolph Streets in 1830; this structure served as both a primary and middle school until 1840 when it burned down due to an electrical fire that destroyed many homes nearby. A new schoolhouse was constructed at what is now Park Avenue and Randolph Streets between 1840 and1851; this building served as both a primary and middle school until 1860 when it burned down again due to arsonism (the second time). A new secondary schools were built along Randolph Street from 1861 to1875; these buildings also served as primaries/middleschools until they were replaced by High Schools around 1925 which are still used today as part of SaintCharles Community School District #1 In 1893, voters approved an act establishing four public high schools withinStCharlesCounty: Carthage Female Academy (now Carthage High School), Centralia Male Academy (now Centralia East High School), Drake Female Academy (now Drake University High School), and Independence Male Academy (now Independence High School). These institutions functioned as either primaries or coeducational secondary schools until 1927 when they were replaced by Catholic high schools which continue to serve today under their respective nameplates In addition to serving public students through four public high schools located withinStCharles County, there are also several private academies/universities located throughout this community which offer undergraduate/graduate level instruction primarily for women only
St. Charles was founded in 1764 by General James Wilkinson and his brother, Colonel John Wilkinson. The town was named after the English saint, Charles Xavier. The first settlers were farmers who grew corn and beans on their farms. In 1834, a sawmill and grist mill were built in the town. The town experienced prosperity during the Gilded Age because of its natural resources such as coal and limestone. However, the depression hit St.Charles hard in the 1930s and 1940s. In 1960, St.Charles became an incorporated city with a population of around 50 people.
