That same year saw another major event in town's history – construction began on the first courthouse in what would become one of America's largest cities – overseeing much of what still exists today across two blocks south of present day Main Street between Second and Third Streets on High Street (later renamed State Street). The cornerstone for this building was laid by Mayor John Lennon on December 15th, 1840 just three months after Lincoln's inauguration as Ulysses S Grant's Vice President! Polk led an army through Missouri towards Saint Louis after winning the Battle of Plattsburg and became the first United States president (1849-1853). Saint Louis was renamed Washington City in 1836 due to American influence in that region at that time. In 1870, Mississippi Confederate General Pemberton invaded Missouri from Arkansas and attacked Union troops near Springfield before withdrawing back into Arkansas. The battle resulted in over 1,000 deaths including Confederate general Pemberton himself; this event is commonly known as the Springfield Campaign.
