In 1821, the town of St. Charles was founded on a small farm three miles east of what is now Springfield, Missouri. The early settlers were farmers who had to work their land for food and shelter. In 1829, the town voted to become an independent city. By 1850, the population of St. Charles had grown to over 1,500 people. The city was named after Saint Charles Borromeo, the patron saint of Italy and France. In 1865, St.Charles became a state capital when Missouri became a US state. The city continued to grow and by 1970 it had reached its current size with over 12,000 residents. Some of the most famous events in St.Charles’ history include: -The 1968 Missouri gubernatorial election which resulted in Richard M Nixon being elected as governor -The 1969 Missoula earthquake which destroyed many homes and businesses in the city -The 1973 Roe v Wade decision which legalized abortion in all fifty U S states
St. Charles is a city in the U.S. state of Missouri, located on the banks of the Mississippi River. The population was 21,569 at the 2010 census. It is included in the Kansas City metropolitan area and is one of two cities in Missouri with a population over 50,000 (the other being Kansas City proper). The original town site was surveyed by George Rogers Clark in 1803 and built by settlers from Kentucky and Tennessee who named it Saint Charles because they were inspired to do so when their brother's body lay incorruptible on an association fee he had paid to a local Indian chief. In 1836, St.Charles became part of Clay County after it was reorganized from parts of Richardson County. In 1841, St.Charles was again organized as a city under the name of "Kansas City". The first white settler living there was John Tipton, who arrived in 1840 from Illinois and founded what would become known as Independence Mall east of downtown KCMMO across from present day Mayflower Memorial Park/John Lennon Airport). The first black resident was James Weldon Johnson who moved to KCMMO from Harper’s Ferry, Virginia in 1944 followed by his son Julius Dyson in 1948; both men worked for American Motors Corporation before moving away from KCMMO permanently during the 1960s when that company merged with Ford Motor Company to form Ford-Ford Industries LLC which continued until 1984 when it merged with Chrysler Corporation to form Fiat Group Automobiles NV (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles SA) which continues today as Jeep Grand Cherokee LLC operations division - making St.Charles home since 1954!
