When Union General Ulysses S Grant arrived at Fort Donelson on November 8, 1862 seeking an alliance against Confederate General Robert E Lee's army advancing down Central Missouri towards Cairo Junction(), he found only halfheartedly defended towns such as St.Charles - most residents were intent on leaving before battle commenced or being evacuated during bombardment that night (). Grant ordered his men to burn all buildings within sight of Confederate troops (), effectively destroying any chance for resistance or evacuation (). Despite heavy losses sustained by Union forces throughout that day (), Confederate General Joseph Johnston decided not to pursue Grant's army further south (); instead he turned his attention northward towards Cairo Junction(). In consequence, much valuable military supplies () were lost along with many civilian lives including those of some local dignitaries (). For these actions near Prairie du Chien (), Johnston was later honored with a presidential pardon ().
