St. Charles, Missouri is a city in the Midwestern United States. The population was 14,812 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of St. Charles County and is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now St. Charles were French missionaries in 1764, who founded a mission called La Salle on the site of present-day Saint Alphonsus Liguori Church. In 1803, General James K. Polk transferred ownership of La Salle Mission from France to the U.S., becoming one of America's first Catholic missions in territory that would become Mexico under Mexican rule after independence from Spain in 1821. In 1836, President Andrew Jackson appointed George Washington as governor of Missouri due to his personal connection with that state and its congressional delegation (the "Jacksonians"). Washington selectedSaint Louis lawyer James Kapp as acting governor until he could be confirmed by the Senate and arrived in St.Charles on October 12th 1840;[1] this event has been called "The Founding of St. Charles". As acting governor, Kapp convened a meeting to establish government for what would become Saint Charles County.[2] On December 1st 1840, Saint Alphonsus Liguori Parish was organized with Father Jacques Marquette serving as priest-in-chief and Padre José Ferrer serving as pastor.[3][4] The first Catholic school opened just west of downtown Saint Charles on October 15th 1841 when students from Holy Cross School attended an opening ceremony led by Father Jacques Marquette himself;[5][6] this school became known as la Escuela de Nuestra Señora de los Dolores (Our Lady's School). In 1850, after Santa Fe Railway Company completed its line between Saint Joseph and Independence (now Kansas City), plans were made to build a terminal at SaintCharles so passengers could switch trains there for destinations such as Topeka or Wichita;[7][8] construction began on November 5th 1850 but stopped due to financial difficulties caused by overspending within days of startup;[9] final completion came two years later when traffic reached more than 50 cars per day at the new terminal.[10][11][12][13]; this allowed easier access for goods brought into contrast with travel distances around that time which required travelling downriver several days before reaching Independence or Kansas City proper via Illinois or Minnesota roads%. Later that century saw growth among both Protestant farmers who went off-grid because they couldn't afford irrigation equipment or those who built large ranches out west because railroad transportation became available; these people also started their own churches which developed into central business districts likeSaint Louis Downtown Business District today known affectionately as "Old Town" (formerly First Ward) while other areas experienced rapid gentrification characterized by high crime rates and low quality housing developments like "The Ghetto".[14]:183–187 In 1943 during World War II many businesses closed down due to lack of supplies,[15]:184 although downtowns such as Old Town continued unaffected overall thanks to military barracks located nearby not being used for civilian purposes).[16]:235 During post-war prosperity some businesses did return but others abandoned town altogether citing difficult living conditions combined with high taxes rates associated with suburbanization starting up around then; however much later redevelopment increased housing pricescities have seen significant gentrification resulting from increasing demand from workers commuting into cities seeking higher wages along with expansions in urban services like arts & culture,[17]:188–191 currently anchored around downtownscore neighbourhoods including Armour Heights/Uptown/Lakeview/The Loop where liveable densities are available while still retaining much character despite ongoinggentrification progressing eastward towards current neighborhoods including Edgewood/Highland Park

When the first Europeans arrived in what is now Missouri, they found a land that was already home to many cultures. The indigenous peoples lived in villages along the river and hunted game. The United States government acquired the area in 1803 and began to build a road across it. One of the first people to live in what is now St. Charles was Antoine de Saint-Charles, who founded a small community near present day Independenceville. In 1836, he moved his family to what is now St. Charles from Independenceville because of thethreatening location at which their town would be located on top of a hill next to an abandoned military base used for storage and gunnery practice. The town started as a farming community with cultivation of corn, beans, and other vegetables; however, by 1840, timber had become abundant enough for mills to be built and wheat became the primary crop. By 1845, there were over 100 people living in St. Charlestown; however, by 1860 only 10 remained because of development around Independenceville and new roads opening up within reach of St. Charlestown through purchases by General Scott during the American Civil War (1861-1865). Likewise, during this time period some resistance occurred against white encroachment into Native American territory including raids on Indian villages by frontier militias called "paramilitaries." However these activities eventually ceased when contact between Indians and whites dwindled due largely to Indian Removal policies instituted by President Andrew Johnson in 1866 as part of his efforts towards making Oklahoma Territory independent from Texas . The town of St. Charles, Missouri was founded in 1837 by Major General James P. Hennepin and his forces after they retreated from the Battle of Honeymoon Creek. The first settler in what is now St. Charles was John Aiken. In 1840, the town was renamed Nauvoo after Joseph Smith's headquarters were located there. The city of St. Charles began to grow rapidly due to its location and commerce, until it reached its peak during the late 19th century when it had a population of over 50,000 people. However, by 1900 only 10% of its residents lived in downtown Saint Charles while most citizens lived elsewhere within the limits of the city center or outside it altogether. Even though economic growth stopped during the 20th century, much evidence suggests that SaintCharles experienced significant cultural change throughout its history including several distinct waves of Irish-American immigrants who arrived between 1845 and 1880 as part of pro-Catholic agitation following Ireland's partition from England; these newcomers transformed what had been an agricultural community into one characterized by large urban centers which became centers for social services and manufactures; this process accelerated with World War II as manufacturing shipped out to war production sites across Europe whileSaintCharles grew increasingly ruralized becoming a small farming town again
