The original St. Ann United Methodist Church was built in 1868 and served as the church for the town of St. Ann until it burned down in 1922. The present building was built in 1924, and serves as the church for the community of St. Ann and its surrounding area.
The Churched parish of St. Ann, located in the southwestern corner of Missouri’s Ozark Mountains, was organized in 1848 as a result of the spiritual needs of the people living there. The parish grew rapidly and by 1870 it had reached a population of over 1,000 people. In 1886, the first church building was erected on the present site. It was designed by architect Augustus Kelley and built at a cost of $3,500. The current church is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary and is one of four churches that comprise the Roman Catholic Diocese of St. Ann (later called Missouri City). Today, St. Ann Parish comprises an area that includes portions of both counties served by the diocese: Dunklin County in the east and Livingston County in the west. The population density for this ecclesiastical jurisdiction was 2,838 people per square mile (1,033/km²). There are two primary sources for religious information about St. Ann Parish: periodicals such as "Stannary", which published records dating back to 1849; and books written by local historians or clergymen themselves, such as "Life in Arkansas" by Rev. Aimee Weems and "Annals Of The Catholic Church In America" edited by James Fenton-Jones. Stannary is one source for records starting from 1849 through 1865; however some items from this era have been lost or destroyed during recent years due to humidity damage over time! The first settlers in St. Ann, Missouri were the Metcalfe family. The Metcalfe family began their journey from Delaware County, Pennsylvania in 1809. They arrived at what is now Saint Ann, MO in 1811 and started a small farm that they named after their ancestor, James Metcalfe. The Metcalfe farm was the original location of Saint Ann Catholic School which is now known as Mount Carmel Catholic Church.
