Saint Ann is a small town in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. The population was 2,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-Springfield-University City micropolitan area. The first settler in what is now St. Ann was John Moore in 1812. He and his family were among the first to arrive on the west side of the Missouri River. A post office called Saint Ann was established in 1830, and remained in operation until 1861. During the years between 1831 and 1836, Jedediah Roe built a log cabin here on land he had claimed from Pierre Laclède for $5 per acre (2 hectares). In 1837, David Wetherbee bought some more land from Roe, and began to build a store on the present site of Saint Ann. By 1840, Wetherbee's store had become an largest business in central Missouri. In 1845–1846, two brothers named Hays founded a school near Saint Ann to serve local childrens' needs while their parents operated businesses elsewhere in town during those difficult times following war with Mexico over California's presence on Mexican soil. That same year also saw construction of what would become St. Anna Catholic Church (later known as Holy Mother Parish), one of many churches built throughout southern Illinois during that time period as Catholics attempt to escape religious persecution back home under General Santa Anna's rule over Mexico City... The earliest settlers hereabouts numbered about twenty or so people; by 1860 they had dwindled down to just six or seven families remaining... From then until 1870 there never really was much growth - only steady decrease led by natural causes - except for occasional families moving out when new plantations were erected around this place." With its close proximity to downtown Springfield and other major waterways which made transportation easy and commerce available across state lines easily accessible through nearby Hannibal or Peoria...being located "just off main street" made it especially valuable for stagecoaches traveling between these cities." There are still several early pioneer buildings still standing today including Ephraim Wilcoxen's former grocery which stands adjacent to Main Street now known as Wilcoxen Place just south of US-6 where it meets I-70 four miles north east of Saint Ann
