This company manufactured spectacles, goggles, binoculars, microscopes and other optical equipment. In 1825, the company moved to its current location on State Street in St. Ann. Over the years, OIC continued to produce high-quality optical equipment for both individual and commercial users. In 1928, OIC merged with another company, the American Optometric Company (AOC). AOC became known as American Optical Corporation (AOEC). AOEC continued to produce high-quality optical equipment until it ceased operations in 1984. Throughout their history at AOEC, the staff of the company have been dedicated to providing customers with top-of-the-line products that meet their needs and expectations. During their time at AOEC, many employees went on to become prominent leaders within the optics industry including president Steven Soderbergh who served from 1986 until his death in 1999; vice president/general counsel Nolan Bushnell who served from 1992 until his death in 2001; vice president/chief financial officer Don Ritchie who served from 2002 until his death in 2006; senior vice president/president of sales Jeff Kappelmeyer who served from 2007 until his death in 2013; and general manager John Sheehan who served from 2014 until his death on July 2nd of this year. Today, American Optical Corporation is still a major player within the optics industry with a strong tradition of innovation and customer service excellence. Their products are still used by some of today’s most eminent professionals throughout North America including NASA astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin Jr.; athletes such as LeBron James and Michael Jordan; educators such as Drudge Report editor Steve Doocy; and many more!

St. Ann was founded in 1836 by Father James K. Polk as a mission station in what is now St. Louis County, Missouri. The early residents of the area were Native Americans who had been driven out of their traditional homes by white settlers. In 1838, the first Catholic church was erected on the site and named after St. Ann, the patron saint of motherhood and childbirth. In 1840, Father Polk built a convent on the site that later became known as the Sisters of Notre Dame de Guelles Abbey (later known as Blessed Virgin Mary Arcadiou House). The sisters served as missionaries to other parts of America for many years before being forced to leave Missouri in 1868 due to religious persecutions by state officials. The Sisters re-established themselves in St. Ann and continued serving God and His people until they left office in 1946. The convent remains a popular tourist destination today and is open to visitors Tuesday through Saturday from 9am to 4pm incline tickets are available at www.stannmissourihistorycenter Museum admission is free for all ages during regular hours!
