St. Ann is a small town in the US state of Missouri. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of St. Joseph County. The town was founded in 1820 by French missionaries who were called to help establish a mission for Roman Catholics in what is now Missouri. The original name for the town was "Fayetteville." The name change came about because many of the settlers in Fayetteville were from Vermont and New Hampshire, two states that had been part of Massachusetts until 1788 when they seceded to create their own country. When St. Ann's first post office opened in 1825, it had only six residents, but within three years it had grown to over fifty-five people with outposts at Paintsville and Ransome (now Ransom). By 1830, there were ninety-six people living in St. Ann and by 1840 it had reached one hundred twenty-four residents including forty-eight children under the age of fifteen. In 1846, during the Mexican–American War, four men from St. Ann traveled to Mexico City on horseback to purchase arms and supplies for General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna’s army as part of a larger effort by American forces to support Mexican independence fighters against Spanish rule prior to their war with Spain later that year mentioned earlier (the war ended without any significant action being taken). After returning home they organized a militia unit which helped suppress an insurrection led by local Native American rebels known as the Kansas Rangers; this event is said alsoto have inspired President James K Polk to order General Zachary Taylor’s military campaign against Mexican insurgents surrounding Fort Sumter seven months later (the Battle of Gettysburg).
