The trigger-action rifles that were used in the American Revolution were conversions of British muskets. The triggers on these firearms were often set to fire single shots, but when the troops' ammunition ran out, they would need to reload. For this reason, guns with trigger mechanisms that could be adjusted to fire multiple rounds at a time became popular. One such gun was the English Pattern Rifle, which had two triggers: one for firing single shots and another for firing grouped rounds. This type of rifle was also called a 'tandemtrigger.' When both triggers were pulled simultaneously, it fired all of the rounds in the grouping. These rifles were used by militia units and during wartime. In St. Ann, Missouri, there is an historical marker dedicated to those who fought in the American Revolution with pistols or rifles (known as ' pistol men'). The marker reads: "Here rests buried from July 4th 1775 to September 14th 1812 six brave souls who gave their lives for our liberties; Patrick Ferguson, James Hickey, John Muhlenberg (Jacker), Nicholas Putnam (Nolan), Daniel Boone." These six individuals represent one of the earliest instances where handguns have been used in combat against fellow Americans. Pistol men fought mainly on defense duties and did not get involved in any fighting until later in the war when more powerful cannons became available. In fact, only two members of this group actually died while serving their country—Patrick Ferguson and James Hickey—and most likely due to other causes unrelated to firearms use.

In 1871, St. Ann's first gunsmith wasbeginning to create triggers for handguns. He named his business Hammerman Firearms and trigger production began. By 1915, the company had becomethe leading trigger builder in the area. The company continued to growand produce triggers until it closed its doors in 1977.
St. Ann, Missouri is a small town in Jackson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The community was named for St. Ann, patron saint of France and mother of Jesus Christ. The first permanent settler in what is now St. Ann was Andrew Miller in 1814; he and his family did not stay long after moving to a new location due to malaria fever they contracted while travelling through Mexico City on their way back to America from Europe. In 1825 three brothers founded a Methodist church in what is now St. Ann which soon grew into one of the largest Methodists churches in the Midwest. In 1857, after years of wrangling with land owners about annexing much of rural Jackson County for their new town, the town's Board voted unanimously to name it "Stannville" honor its founder and namesake, George Atherton Stannus (1796-1868). The post office was established at Stannville in 1865; it remained there until 1898 when it was moved to Topeka because mail service between Topeka and Saint Louis had been discontinued by railroadroads during that time period. In 1907 two brothers organized an agricultural society which became one of the most important forces behind early industry development in the community; they also donated land for a school district which opened in 1909 and remains operational today as Topeka Community School District No..1 (TCSD1).

In 1831, Missouri became a state and St. Ann was chosen as the state's capital. The city was renamed to Columbia in 1854 after the University of Missouri moved from Jefferson City to Columbia. In 1907, St. Ann became the home of the first African American high school in Missouri when it opened at Fort Scott High School.
