The town of St. Ann, Missouri, was founded in 1834 by the Episcopal bishop of the diocese of Kansas City and named in honor of his wife, Saint Anne. The original town was located on the present-day border of Johnson County and Platte County. In 1836, the bishops transferred the seat of theirdiocese to Independence, Missouri; however, St. Ann continued to be one of the most important localities in that diocese until it was dissolved in 1960. Today, many people in this small town celebrate religious services at the historic Anglican church built in 1902. Today’s population is about 1,500 people and there is a grocery store and post office as well as a few other businesses. The primary industry is agriculture with some land used for manufacturing such as cheese production or wheat flour mills. There are also a few small businesses that do not have anything to do with farming but provide services such as janitorial work or home health care for those who cannot leave their homes because of illness or injury. Some people also go into downtown St. Ann for shopping around for new clothes or appliances before going back home to help out with farm chores during summer months when there are no schools open in town. The history of St. Ann goes back even further than that – it is recorded that early pioneers living near present-day St. Ann were familiar with an Indian village called Kanawha which lay northeast of today’s town on what is now called Arkansas Avenue (now known as Springfield Boulevard). Consequently, when Bishop James Hickey organized his Diocese from parts east of Kansas City on October 14th 1833 (the same day Kansas Territory became statehood), he appointed Father John Dearborn (a Canadian priest) Vicar Apostolic de Kanawha to lead all Catholic missionaries westward across Ulysses S Grant’s newly acquired western territory! Father Dearborn arrived here on November 6th1833 and promptly established himself among the Indians at Kanawha – slowly but surely making friends and building trust over time! It wasn’t long before Reverend Drury discovered “a good place for a mission station near old Fort Hays” where he erected his own convent/church/missionary school on September 25th 1840! Fraternity brothers soon started arriving from Canada too – many coming specifically to live close enough so they could minister to our Indian brethren right here among us!!! This friendly atmosphere helped foster strong missionary brotherly relationships which remain incredibly valuable today! Interestingly enough, after Ft Hays closed its doors permanently due to lackadaisical management some Irishmen arriving independently decided it would make more sense if they moved their headquarters closer to KC so they could share resources equally!! So within just a few years God had blessed us again with another excellent friar - Father Patrick Cruiselli who arrived here December 10th 1840!!! WithFather Patrick we had 3 regular priests & 8 Brothers working hard every day!!!!! We then added Sisters Bernadette (nee O'Malley) & Teresa Manningham later that year!!!! After 4 years + more difficult missionary effort we finally succeededin getting possessionof De Lisle's Ranchiturkey Creek siteJuly 7st 1845!!& naming it "St Ann"after Our Lady's Helping HandWWI industrialistArchie Demarest whose donation greatly aided our cause!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The history of St. Ann, Missouri can be traced back to the early 1800s when the area was first settled by Europeans. The town was named after Saint Anne, a Virgin Mary who is venerated in many European countries. In 1821, the town was incorporated and began to grow rapidly due to its location on the Mississippi River. By 1832, it had become a small village with a population of just over 100 people. However, by 1838, St. Ann had reached its peak as it became home to over 1,500 residents. The town experienced rapid growth during the 1830s and 1840s thanks to its strategic location on the river and its access to goods and services from nearby cities. During this time period, St. Ann also became known for its rich cultural values and for its unique architecture which included brick buildings and Gothic Revival style architecture. In 1870, due to various factors including an economic recession and increasing population density in larger towns across Missouri, St. Ann declined in popularity but continued to maintain a high level of culture until around 1915 when it slowly lost momentum again due to changing social norms and changes in technology that made life more difficult for rural communities like St. Ann numericaly speaking (1). In 1978-1980, however, a revitalization campaign led by Mayor John Houchens restored some of the old charm while modernizing infrastructure such as water systems and Lighting System which improved safety for residents (2). Today, there are still pockets of traditional architecture that can be found throughout the community while much has been updated since 1978-1980 (3). Overall, though Saint Ann has experienced several periods of growth and decline throughout its history; it has always managed to retain some of its traditional features which make it an interesting place to live today.-
The first European to visit the area was a French Jesuit priest, Father Jacques Marquette in 1793. He charted the present-day route of theMissouri River and named it for St. Ann, an English princess who had been married to Louis XIV of France. The town developed around this initial settlement and soon became a major transportation hub on the river. The town was incorporated in 1836 as a result of growth within its boundaries. In 1865, Union General James Halleck moved his army downstream from Cairo, Illinois to occupy what is now Missouri City after they were defeated by Confederate General Robert E. Lee at Appomattox Court House. This event marked the end of slavery in Missouri and beginning of Reconstruction Era in America. In 1871, the city annexed what is now Kansas City proper into Missouri City following passage of a state act that granted local autonomy within Kansas City government limits. In 1907, Missouri became one of thirty-six United States states which ratified the US Constitution; however, Reconstruction ended before it could take full effect due to various problems including violence and economic instability caused by newly arising social unrest across America during that time period known as "the great American experiment." On December 14th 1921, three days after Missouri's entry into World War I on April 6th 1917 with Great Britain as our ally against Austria-Hungary (Great Britain had entered World War I because they felt their neutrality would be violated if Austria-Hungary remained independent), two planes carrying Austrian nationals crashed into Interstate 70 just east of Rolla causing both deaths and extensive damage; this event is also commonly referred to as "The Crash" or simply "The incident". It took until 1935 for all bridges over I-70 west between Rolla and Independence to be rebuilt following the incident which destroyed many homes along the way including those at Poplar Street Bridge; this bridge still remains open today although portions thereof have been replaced by new highway construction pending plans for an increase in traffic volume adjacent thereto (see #Rolla bridge).
