St. Ann is a small town in northeastern Missouri, United States. The population was 2,047 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Independence, MO Micropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1834 by Father Ignatius Loyola as a mission station on the banks of the Arkansas River. In 1892 it became an incorporated municipality and in 1904 it became a state-chartered town under the name of Independence. The current name comes from Saint Ann's Parish, which was organized in 1907 and located in what is now St. Ann Township. In 1895 Thaddeus Stevens founded the National Agricultural Library at St. Ann and he donated land for its construction on which it currently stands; this library is one of only three public libraries established outside of New York City during that time period (the others are Cooper Union and Brooklyn Museum). Stated to be "the most important agricultural research center in Missouri", NASL has played an important role in developing advances such as herbicides, pesticides, and other agricultural products used today throughout much of America. Like many small towns across America before it, St. Ann experienced decline during World War II with almost all its businesses closed down due to wartime shortages caused by the warring nations' involvement abroad or by changes within American society itself; however, through hard work and dedication by residents over several decades NASL bounced back stronger than ever before becoming one of Independence's primary community boosters actively promoting healthy eating habits among its citizens as well as working to promote local agriculture both locally AND nationally when necessary through partnerships with organizations like Iowa State University's Extension Service - making NASL oneOf THE most comprehensive agricultural education programs available anywhere! A few years ago they also renovated their high school complete with new classrooms/lab space/ kitchens/etc... The town was named for Ann (15th century Englishwoman who gave her name to an annual fair) and its location near the confluence of three great rivers made it attractive to early settlers. The first post office in St. Ann was established in 1825 and it remained in operation until 1868 when it became part of St. Louis City limits. Ann's Fairgrounds are still a popular tourist destination today and are home to a variety of shows and attractions year-round including a rodeo every fall; art exhibitions throughout the year; as well as concerts by local bands each summertime
In 1821, the first Baptist church was built in St. Ann, Missouri. The first pastor of the Baptist Church in St. Ann was John Gentry. In 1828, a school was built to help educate the local children. The school operated until 1861. In 1872, a post office was established in St. Ann and served the community until 1889. In 1912, a water tower was erected in honor of Godfrey Kappler and Josephine Kappler-Wright who donated land for the foundation of Kappler-Wright University which opened its doors in 1915.
